Hurricane Irma

185 mph winds. That's scary and awe inspiring at the same time. I remember as a lad trying to walk down Wigan Rd the year when we had our hurricane - winds must have been about 70 max and we were leaning straight into it - linking arms so we didn't blow over.

Just an update lots of flooding but Mrs and lad all safe, thanks for your messages fellas.

  • I heard JetBlue were putting extra planes on and charging just $99 for short-haul domestic flights, as a gesture of goodwill and excellent advertising/PR.

The state of this. Fookin ell. Mother Nature doesn't give a flying fuck.

Hope all is well Dom Rep mate.

Fascinating to hear you TW. Puts us getting our knickers in a twist about a stiff breeze into perspective.

There's 3 of the fuckers!

One following in behind Irma called Jose and one just formed in the Gulf of Mexico called Katia.

That's fucked up

4-00PM  Track as changed a wee bit to the East of Miami, winds still at 184mph and gusts up to 224 mph, land fall around 1pm on Sunday

Gonzo I was keeping those quite

It's god paying everyone back for having boys and girls clothes all these years and offending folk . Karma

I know mate and i am really concerned. She did try and go inland and book a hotel around Orlando but everyone is fully booked. My cousin reckons it should hit them on Sunday and maybe a Cat 4 by then but from what you say they may have misjudged this one. I just hope they change their minds come Friday and head up to the Carolinas.

They certainly have the sunshine most of the year but the prospect of coping with an ever increasingly destructive hurricane season has to be factor to move to the west coast surely

The west coast is on fire

The west coast is on fire

And they have Trump as President too, they're doooooooooomed

Hope all goes safely Dom and P for your family members

West coast is fantastic

However it's one big tectonic fault line, one day it will all just fall into the Pacific never to be seen again

Hope all goes safely Dom and P for your family members

Thanks Tom

This has been a cheery morning read!

As per usual our national news focusses on the "poor folk" in Florida.

And only spent a few minutes on the devastation it was already causing in the Caribbean islands.

Such biased toss.

I did go to bed thinking how much we moan about the shitty rainy weather we have over here. But by Christ we don't have any of this natural disaster shite to contend with like many parts of our planet.

Typhoons in the sub-continent, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and crazy fuckin' dictators shooting missiles across our bows.

We've a friend in Orlando at the minute and they are literlally sharing the parks with a handful of people.

To be fair smiley, there was a similar question raised re the floods in Bangladesh compared with Houston.

A news bod explained that safety, logistics etc were taken into account when reporting such stuff.

Its probably easier and safer to report from Florida that a small Caribbean island.

Thanks Tom, all good at the moment just heavy rain, still early in the storm over there

Bloody terrifying quote on the BBC now:

Speaking from Antigua, the president of the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross, Michael Joseph, told the BBC: "It's electricity, it's roads, it's water, it's schools, it's churches, it's supermarkets, shops, everything. There is literally nothing that currently exists in Barbuda right now."

Seen some aerial pics earlier from one island. Virtually nowt left standing.

Only commented the other day that guys putting shuttering over windows might be pissing in the wind.

Hopefully it won't put off too many holiday makers in the future as they're going to need the income.

that's what 185 mph winds do

that's what 185 mph winds do

Aye, never mind the 220 mph ones. :(

As a friend commented last night, this is a 400 mile wide tornado, and if the track carries on it will go straight through Miami  , no change over night except the winds have decreased to 178 mph so still a cat 5, forecast  to hit as a cat 4 but as with Harvey who knows, that went from a cat 2 to 4 in 6 hours

I don't know how true it is, but somebody on the radio just said that it's looking like it might be "picking up" in strength now  :shok:

The last forecast was at 7-00am this morning and had the winds at 178 (slightly down over night) the next one is at 10-00am, the other worrying point on this will be the storm surge ( this is the amount of water that gets pushed in front of the storm) the last I saw it was 10 to 12 feet, now seeing lot of that area is swamp that will not be good either

Saw a woman on the news last night, hoping to get off Turks & Caicos - said folk had paid £12K for flights home.

What cost? Panic and pay it? Or ride the storm?

Beats me why folk build houses out of wood in a known Hurricane hotspot.

Get some concrete foundations/bricks/mortar houses built and there might be more chance they'll still be standing when the storm passes.
