as anybody near me will testify, the selection of wilbraham topped off an utterly shit week

barnstoneworth just told me it was absolutely the right decision and he had picked the team that shouldve started at burton

out of interest, what were the restrictions that meant we could sign Buckley, Taylor, Ameobi, Little, Darby, Le Fondre, Noone & Wilbraham on frees, + 5 players on loan, but meant we couldn't sign Henry till September?

for me it was quite the oversight to let Spearing go and sign 5 forwards, but no defensive midfielder

though I'd also say that the return from injury for Vela and Ameobi at the same time as Henry's arrival transformed the first team and approach massively

As far as I understood it at the time Buckley, Taylor etc, were signed under the 'old' embargo conditions but new, more harsher ones were introduced severely restricting the amount of salary we could pay to players and as Spearing was at the time holding out for a wage increase, it basically left us to begin the season with no defensive midfielder in the squad, let alone the team.

Reading between the lines I think it was the EFL's way of pushing the club to come out of the embargo which it duly did with a couple of months.

The link below refers to how the maximum wages that could be paid under the old embargo which if I recall correctly was around £9,000 per week were suddenly reduced to £4,500 per week, under the new, harsher embargo, which killed the Spearing deal stone dead at the time - and that it was 'hoisted' on the club mid summer, even though we had already been under an embargo for over a year before that.

In short if Spearing hadn't had been so greedy and accepted the terms all the rest signed up for at the time, there wouldn't have been a problem as such, however he held out and got caught out with the harsher wage pay limits of the new embargo - and both he and the club missed out.

So we basically have a shit sandwich. shit at the start, ok in the middle, pretty shit at the end.

On the basis of the season and my belief the squad was good enough to survive for me he has a lot of questions to answer. expalin the freezing out and i may change my opinion (not that he has to answer to me this is just my opinion). At the end of the season we were very lucky and we may not be as fortunate next time.

lets not mistake the credit he is rightly getting for keeping us up.

i don't know anyone who saw the strikeforce pre kick off sunday who didn't think ALF should be playing. Yes wilbraham scored in the end up but he missed many and i don't believe this would have been the case with ALF.

although as the guy who sits near me text his mate "Tell that fat bastard how good is wilbraham now" which shows how daft it is. the lad still shouldnt be leading our line but now hes a world beater.

Spearing left on July 8th - which left another month till the start of the season

https://www.bwfc.co.uk/news/2017/july/jay-spearing-leaves-wanderers/

Taylor came in May, ALF start of June, Little mid June, Buckley came on 30th June, Ameobi 14th July, Wilbrham on 3rd August, Noone 31st August

point being players were signed either side of Spearing leaving, not sure when this harsher embargo kicked in or was lifted, but suspect had it kicked in before Spearing left, we wouldn't have signed Ameobi and probably Noone

Henry signed in September but I suspect other than Wilbraham he was probably the lowest paid signing last season, embargo or otherwise and would've been available all summer

Well it was all a bit of a mystery around the time, with the club saying they were not aware of the new, harsher, embargo being implemented - maybe this link is more informative to you? -

EDIT - I've finally been able to track down Iles article on the 'harsher; embargo - dated 27th July, 2017

so based on that, it wasn't the embargo that led to spearing leaving as he left 2 weeks or so before it kicked in - I would have thought he just wanted more than we were willing to offer

there was still seemingly nothing to stop us bringing in a DM though, as we still got a winger and a striker whilst under this embargo based on the dates

be interesting to know what KH is on a week, as he'd have been available throughout the summer

If memory serves he wanted around 18K a week to re sign. Down from 30K he was on on his previous contract

Ended up signing with Blackpool for 8K

The embargo was in force at a £10k a week cap at the point Spearing left. He wouldn’t agree to wages we could offer him. It is likely he’d have gone even without the embargo as the club couldn’t afford his requests under Ken’s budgetary control.

Blackpool paying 8k

Good lord what's the going rate in our league

Probably £18,000 a week will be the average.

As with any average, they are skewed.

I thought Spearing was on about 16K a week when he first signed for us? Really can't see us paying him 30K at the time and no way are the Donkey lashers paying him 8K a week!

speaking of embargos

just read an article that mentioned who the last player we actually paid for was

fuck me, we're better off being under an embargo

Oooh

I reckon we have a winner

If you were offended by spearings Blackpool wages you'd be more offended by his Bolton wages.

On the wages game we should of walked league 1.
