Im late for work now FA Cup 6th Round, 1 March 1958 against League Champions Wolves. Amongst the best games ever at Burnden Park. 56,306 saw goals from Dennis Stevens and Ray Parry that somehow managed to win the day against a rampant Wolves side that ran us ragged. We were 17th after a home defeat to hartlepool, then McGinley scored his 1st BW goal (or 2?) at Chester and then we won at home before the 2-2 at PNE. We didn't win an away game till November which is some going for a team that finished 2nd. I was a bit out with the length of the unbeaten run, but from the Chester game we only lost 4 of the last 35 games. What an impact by Rioch. Moderators Casino Posted February 26, 2019 Moderators Share Posted February 26, 2019 Atmosphere was particularly unpleasant at Preston That season was definitely a slow burner If you watch the goals vid from Chester, there's one bloke giving em dogs abuse Isn't there Mr meldrew
Take Hunt Off
My PNE mate always reckons at two down we were baying for Bruce's head I corrected him that it was 'sack the board ' type stuff following a string of poor results & a failure to get the David Lee deal over the line. Subsequently we had a tenner bet on which team would finish higher that season.....ha ha. I think they sacked John McGrath shortly after the Bolton game even though they were top tenish & brought in that balloon John Beck who got them relegated. Site Supporter Alf Hartigan Posted February 27, 2019 Site Supporter Share Posted February 27, 2019 I wasn't at the Chester game but remember the Preston game vividly and knew something special was happening after that.
