Aye, same here and totally agree. Even Reading, though, was a bit of a fuck up if you think about it - with the best will in the world if you go two down and concede a penalty then you've buggered it up because 9 times out of 10 you'll get stuffed. OK, it turned out to be one of greatest imaginable days, but you'd have replay it again many times (from that point) before we won again. Fair play for the effort against Liverpool, and actually winning summat against Torquay. But Bristol result was bad (though I did cheer up later in the week when a Bristol supporting mate at work informed me that the van they won as a prize had just been nicked from the club car park), Tranmere and Stoke horrible, Watford forgettable...and then the moment in the Villa game where we could have made symmetric FA Cup history by being in the first and last final at the old ground. Only for...well you know the rest ☹️

Pretty sure pops did all Wembley trips incl 58 (don’t think he did 53) and cardiff trips - but only just got a ticket for Boro game

My Wembley record - 

Bristol City - Went with my dad in the car (probably his Lada). Can't remember that much. Bit shit.

Torquay - Went with my mates on a coach. Sunny day. We won. Even swapped some memorabilia with opposition fans. Had a holiday in Torquay a few weeks later. Everyone happy.

Tranmere - Went with mates in a car, stayed overnight at a parents' friends' house somewhere in London. It had gold plated taps. Think the bathroom suite was in pink. We feared for our arseholes. He was a tanned, hairy chested, medallion-type of guy. Very weird. Pink Champagne Whizz springs to mind as well. Super-pissed off.

Liverpool - Went on a coach from the local. So close to European football. Proud of the players.

Reading - Went on coach from local. Greatest game ever. Remember being pissed up sat outside Allen's on Bradshawgate around midnight. We'd had a cracker of a day and one of the lads suggested we go grave-robbing in the local cemetery. Safe to say we didn't. Very happy.

Watford - Went with the ex-Mrs. Stayed overnight. Had a good sing-song with the Gillingham and City fans the night before after their epic game. Couldn't' wait to get home after our defeat. Gutted.

Villa - Went on a coach from local with a few mates down from Scotland - can't remember that much other than the Holdsworth miss. Gutted.

Stoke - Went down day before for a wedding (was sweating as we were waiting on a City European result to find out if we were playing Sat or Sun). Train in from Essex. Good day around the big smoke. Game was shit. Stoke fans way too close for comfort. Wouldn't have taken much for them to have piled into our section. Left after the 4th goal. Embarrassed.

Also saw Rochdale lose to Stockport in a play-off final.

England beat Hungary 1-0 in 1990 (first game after Italia 90).

And the Foo Fighters. They were pretty decent - so taking that as a victory.

Been for a concert and a couple of rugby league matches too.

Went to Bristol and it was miserable. Couldn't do Torquay and we won. Decided that was the pattern - don't go to the really big games and you 'win' either way (plus they're on telly).

Broke the rule for Stoke.

I wholeheartedly apologise.

Farnworth was alright until he made a blunder and Phil Neal publicly slated him. Then he was shit-scared of that round white thing, especially if it was coming out of the clouds. Classic man-management of a 'promising' young keeper.

Quite. Definitely went off the boil.

Well if we're including non Bolton games then as living down there for the 80s I went to most England games in that time.

Most memorable (for different reasons) were the first and last. First was Hungary in 81  - it was the time we looked like missing out on WC yet again (the famous Norway commentator defeat) so when I sent off for a ticket there was no probs. Then by the time I was down there, late 81, they were like gold dust as we'd turned it around and only need a draw to get there. First proper qualification achievement since 1962 (as we were hosts in 66, qualified as winners for 70, fucked up in 74 and 78), so having 92,000 on was a bit of an eye opener to say the least (capacity was reduced from 100k for might matches). 

Last England game I saw there was about 1990, against Brazil. Lad at work had a spare ticket so I naturally went for it - it was Brazil after all. Fucking most boring 0-0 you could imagine, but at least I avoided paying the bastard for the ticket!

Did see us beat Luxembourg 9-0. And for some reason ended up in the Swindon end in their playoff game against Sunderland. Still to this day can't remember why 😄

In my life time we really do have a shit record at Wembley. Stoke, Villa and the Tranny defeats were very hard to take.

 

 

Been to a cup final, and one in Cardiff, which was probably more than I could have dreamed of, whilst watching division 4 games in a crowd of 4000 or so.

My first ever trip to Wembley; my dad worked on location facilities and got us in for free... Could've witnessed history had Lineker not fucked up a 5th minute penalty. 

 

Was in awe of the heat (glorious Sunday) and size of the ground. The bagged tickets were right under the gantry and we saw Des Lynam and Trevor Brooking.

We drove down in a little Yugo- a bright red two seater van. I didn't have a clue where I was going, and I suppose I try and give my kids the same kind of surprises now... I just hope I was as grateful then as I am now, and moreso that he knew how much I appreciated it.

It's probably hard for kids these days to understand, despite the Beebs attempts to insist it still exists, but years ago there really was a special magic around the FA cup.

One of my happiest memories as a kid is my dad handing me an envelope with 2 FA cup final tickets in there. The embossed finish with a silver cup on them. Seeing the ground and the walk up Wembley way, at that time (1982) I never thought I'd get to see Bolton play there.

The game, Spurs v QPR, was said to be a shocker but I didn't care. The two ends behind the goals were still all standing then. 

Dad's are great. I'm blessed to still have mine and you've prompted me to remind him of that day and how special it was. Cheers

My Grandad took me to the 1967 England v Scotland game when the goal posts got ripped up & Jim Baxter did his keepy uppy thing. That was the first time that England had got beat since winning the world cup.

It was also the first time that I had seen grown men pissing on the terraces & Wembley was full of fucking crazy Jocks who were having a great day out. Blood, beer & piss everywhere - it was carnage. I took my Bolton scarf as they were the same colours as England but ended up losing it in the crush.

I picked up two Tartan rosettes (remember them?) as souvenirs & took them into Sunning Hill primary on the Monday. I gave them to a lad who was mentioned on here recently - Jeff Fearnley (RIP). Fucking years ago but unforgettable that day.

Been to every Wanderers Wembley & Cardiff game since.

Reading game the pick & the Stoke the worst. 

I've done all the Wembley and Cardiff games like Horwich, along with a few England games including all the Euro 96 matches as a lad I was working with had access to tickets via his girlfriends dad who worked for the ticketing company.

I also went to the 1999 FA Cup final having won some tickets in a draw

Done all Bolton games at Wembley/Cardiff since the 80's.

Did all the Wanderers ones except the Stoke one......Wanderers debut v Brizzle...I watched through one eye as I was shitfaced....Millwall turned up after to have a go at Bristol,fun and games on the car park.

Did most England games from the mid 80’s to the last one there v Germany when Keegan resigned.

Good seeing our lads starting to have a go back off the pitch v the Sweaties in the early 80’s.

Holland ‘88 was amusing and infamous for several reasons, as was the one v the Jocks in ‘88 when a few hundred were arrested,myself included.

Euro 96...if only Gazza was a couple of inches bigger.....ooh matron.

Great days at the old Wembley, wouldn’t go now if I was paid to go.
