Sadly a negative PCR test is here for the long term It’s the only way we are ever going to be able to travel.

If they want to.

It appears that we may be able to return to a more normal way of life in the not too distant future- that sadly may be at the expense of foreign travel for a while. If it helps the majority of the economy to start getting back on track then so be it.

I know the media tend to report on the negative, but it is also clear that a good number of our medical professionals themselves are in need of help, and may leave altogether as a result of this.

Quite selfish to risk putting them under undue pressure for the sake of a few more months. It might also backfire too.

International travel from red areas should be banned, areas of low infection should resume after May 17th, and only then with pcr test before & test & release after a number of days. With these measures and another 6 weeks of vaccinations, then there is no chance of infection rates and subsequent hospital admissions rising anywhere near levels that puts the NHS and its staff under undue pressure. I hope the bill today has a hefty number of MPs voting against it, a shot across the bows is required, to remind Boris that we live in a democracy.

But we've moved on from the Magna Carta. The situation is new to us all and we need to adapt to survive.

I am. I was showered with advice on the Brexit thread about "dealing with it" and "moving on" and "looking for the positives".

So here I am, doing all those things around Covid, and the people dishing out that sage advice then seem unable to follow it now.

Arguably the biggest brexit positive so far (only been 3 months) is the vaccine approach. We could have done it as a member but almost certainly wouldn't have.

On that basis, it would seem pertinent to follow the path which it has afforded us to its end point.

You say 'no chance' but that is the great unknown. No one really knows the potential impact of the new variants and fear of those seems to be driving thinking.

I keep asking what would motivate the Govt to keep us under restrictions other than a genuine fear that the virus could return and have had no answers. The restrictions are causing the economy massive issues and the Govt gets loads of shit, there is no benefit I can see other than controlling the virus.

Our vaccination programme is immense. Best in the world and hats off to Team Boris for sorting it.

But

It's a vaccine that hasn't had the usual years of trials to study long term effects in the population. There's already talk of boosters being a regular requirement.

The main worry is clearly that millions of people going to all corners of Europe - a Europe that is way behind and struggling.

Yes, we are vaccinated, but it could undo a massive and brilliant effort if we all start bringing back variants that elude the vaccine.

I hate to say it, but we need to rein back on the travel. To quote Mr. Churchill

"We will defend our island, whatever the cost may be"

 New variants arrive when folk arrive from areas of high infection rates, like France, why are they not on the red list?
 

I’m suggesting no travel from red list or high infection rate countries to reduce the risk of variants as this seems to me the only way infection rates will rise, the facts are we’ve vaccinated the high risk, a variant isn’t coming from folk who live in U.K. therefore there is an argument to be had to speed up opening U.K. business to normal levels sooner than the current timeline.  

Travel from low risk areas should begin May 17th with testing.

My real concern is that this government will continue down this route and extend the lockdown and without ever submitting any evidence or facing any challenges in parliament.

I’m finding it quite unbelievable that normally intelligent folk are meekly and mildly accepting the status quo without question, we need the government to be held to account cross examined and questioned in Parliament. That is not happening and does not sit well with me.

You're right about opening up the UK

We should be getting back to normal no question.

But the pay off for that will have to be travel restrictions.

What if Spain is teetering on the brink of going on the red list and there are a million Brits there? They can't all just come home in a day.

It's shit, no-one likes it, but I think we may just have to do it.
