There'll never be a better time to play them, its their 4th game in 10 days and we've played 2 in 2 weeks.  They'll be mentally all over the show with playing Utd and Watford recently.  And 1 day less "recovery" than us.  Come on lets have a win.

91 play off final started it when they went over the top with there celebrations beating us then. Then when John Aldridge the bellend did that you going up but your going straight back down gesture to the fans pissed a lot of people off when was going for 100 points.

Around mid 90s a mate of mine had a book in which the author compiled loads of facts about every league club like highest attendance etc. They also wrote to each club's fanzines asking about rivalries. Tranmere one referred to our matches as being the 'Division 2 equivalent of Liverpool v Man Utd'

I've despised these since our 4th division days. They were bottom of the league, called their game off against us because of the police bill if I remember correctly then they were in form when we actually played them - they beat us. Not sure this was when the rivalry started though other than in my tiny mind

Maybe Doncaster fans have a point of not liking us

Always used to play their weekend home games on Friday nights in the hope of attracting Liverpool and Everton fansthrough the Mersey Tunnels to watch.

The rivalry really started in the late 80s and wasnt helped by Elton Welsby and Granada fawning all over them in contrast to the other NW sides in the same division who got barely a mention.

They slagged off Burnden in their match programme, were widely despised by other clubs in Division 3 at the time for badgering refs and one of their players assaulted Stuart Storer in front of Gordon Sharrock during a post match interview.

On top of all that, they were utterly classless c*nts at Wembley, McAteer was subject to death threats prior to a 2nd tier game and then they hired Aldridge.

It got worse from there

Like someone said earlier, i wonder how many of our current crop of players realise how much this game means to the fans

No doubt it will be treated just like any other game, if only we had a McGinlay, a Taggart, and a Pollock - a spine with bollocks.

You’d like to think our famously Boltonian coaching team would be aware of the significance.

The 'rivalry' definitely started with that game.  I remember the game being called off due to the police saying they couldnt cope with the size of away following expected, I think it was because one of Everton or Liverpool were at home the same day but I could be wrong.  So when we played the game on a Tuesday night their manager Johnny King put a snide comment in his programme notes something like welcome to the hoardes of Bolton fans tonight.  Obviously we only took about 1500 instead of maybe double that on a Saturday.  That was the start of their revival, they went from bottom of div 4 to top 6 or so of 2nd tier in about 6 years (dont quote me) and it roughly coincided with our rise so we ended up with a big rivalry at the time.  Its strange how you end up with rivals because their fortunes mirror yours for a few years and every match is huge - Ipswich and Wolves are the other 2 that spring to mind and possibly the Wigan rivalry wouldnt have happened if we hadnt kept following each other around the divisions.

1983? Our first year back in the 3rd division.  Was it Joyce scored late on? We always conceded in the last minute in them days

What was the original start point for the hatred?

They got absolutely smashed on the car park at Wembley after the game, Bolton fans were not amused and went to town on any scouser who opened their mouth, blood a bust noses all over the place.

Nov 83

Joyce did score, along with chandler (pen)

Nearly as many on at theirs as there were for the replay which shows the size of our travelling support back then

I was at the FA Cup match in Nov 83, I remember feeling the novelty of being in the 1st round, and it felt like a big game.  We didnt take "loads",  probably 1,500, they only gave us half of the terrace under the main stand, and some seats.  They had a biggish open terrace behind the goal then and if we'd been taking loads they would have surely given us that.  Good cup tie atmosphere, Bryan Hamilton was player manager and I think he scored.  Replay was one of the coldest I've ever known at Burnden, absoulutely freezing sat in Lever End, and went to extra time, but we won 4-1 and Chandler scored a fantastic lob.  I can remember those games better than I can last season's.
