How come there isn't a thread for this ?

Is it because they've revealed their true colours, excuse the deliberate pun.

Folk were warned re their true intentions, but as always called racist by the naive.

I think an apology and and an explanation that it's a term that previously didn't offend, but does now, and how we need to have more awareness moving forward would've been more than sufficient in this case

A lot of folk don't mean anything by it, we need to move forward, no need to demonise it

My grandad used the term paki because that's what his generation did in a non offensive way, if he'd been around now I'm sure he'd have been aghast to think it offended

Wasn't just that though was it. Didn't he say bumming other men was a life choice?

It is in "Germany" 😁

Yeah definitely

its not offensive or racist, uneducated in modern times maybe but racist, do me a favour

Aye, my parents will probably say coloured because they think that's the PC term nowadays.

What I don't understand is when folk aren't too old to not be able to change their vocabulary, decide they'll carry on using it because they don't think it's offensive.

Dunno

Pushing back is the choice, as we all know

It's not always a choice I've heard.

Aye that's how I see it. It's a sensitive world we live in. Cheers for the article 👍

Just think its interesting to balance, I wouldn't use the term, and it will move to being obsolete soon enough but its interesting in the development of language.

Yeah my Jamaican grandma. I personally wouldn’t be offended by it

Thought it was 👍 it wasn’t long back when there were 2 x black women on (I think) question time arguing with each other on what they can and can’t be called, if they couldn’t agree them Us honkeys are fucked!

I got pulled up today for saying someone looked 'Oriental' 🤷‍♂️

See I’m fairly young and I probably wouldn’t use the term but I wouldn’t have thought it was offensive

It was looking at a Students data loon our intranet and she had an english name and I turned to my assistant and said, "I didnt expect that, she's oriental looking"

Anyway next time I will keep it zipped 🤐

Don't change to chinky!

Why do you still use it?

Edit - just spotted you weren't aware it could be seen as offensive. But, now you know, will you continue to use it?

Yes probably inadvertently although will consciously try not too. I didn’t ever use it knowingly in earshot or whilst in the company of anyone of colour anyway i don’t think. I just used it as a saying which I believed was acceptable but it clearly now isn’t!

You can not say coloured but you can say people of colour. Because coloured/coloured is linked to the description of anyone non white in the old south.
You can say someone black but I saw something that BAME is now being frowned on. A few years ago saying someone was black was frowned.
I think people using these terms in everyday life can not be called racist on that basis. But a senior person in an organisation has to be aware of what is acceptable.
It is a minefield.

'Coloured' is well racist now. It's 'people if colour' - which is of course miles different! 🙄

Will leave that to that bloke who broke his leg, you know that bloke from Wiggin.

Miami ? Thought it was his ankle ?

I will be honest, describing someone as Asian confuses the fuck out of me when folk use it. Asia isn't exactly a small place.

Reminds me of the "debate" around the name of the University once umist was merged with its neighbour.

Supposedly they spent £20k on consultants who narrowed it down to University of Manchester or Manchester University. Fuck me, wish I'd thought of that!

😁 - we're in the wrong jobs mate clearly!

Intent is the key with these things in my eyes.

Absolutely. Part of the issue now is that people aren't sure what to say, which makes things more awkward.

Perhaps we should all learn the police identifiers, IC whatever.

They'll be changing the name of Uncle Ben's rice next at this rate! 😁

And it's mainly white people deciding these matters 🙄

To be fair, about 15 years ago I was walking down from the car park above Debenhams when a few lads came running up the stairs and asked if I had seen a couple of asian lads. I said no but it was only later I realised they meant lads like them, south asia as in India/Pakistan area. 🤷‍♂️

As long as they never change 'Hash Browns'

CBD Browns is the preferred term these days I believe.

Fair play. Nobody should have a problem with anyone with that sort of attitude.

Problem is folk would have an issue. I have a black woman in my team at work (proves I’m not racist) (32c I reckon) and I would never ever even think to talk about her colour or even see it as a defining factor She’s just one of the team. But if I ever did use the term I’m sure she wouldn’t be offended but no doubt I would get sacked if reported
