Further to the word Oriental being acceptable or not, is the word Asian acceptable when used to describe a person from, particularly, the Indian sub-continent? I often use the term Asian to save face when failing to identify a person as Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Goan, etc. So it’s used specifically so I don’t label someone with wrong geographical area.  Asia as a continent covers 30% of the land mass on Earth. 

I work for a Japanese company. When I raised this with HR after my “Oriental” faux pas I was told I should distinguish between South Asian and East Asian. When I queried this with a couple of folk both sides very definitely affirmed it not wanting to be lumped in with “the other lot”.....

Anyway, when we visit the office we have nicknames for a lot of the desk jockeys - Mr Magoo, Slaphead, Mr Tumble, The Ripper, Orville, Hopalong, etc. Far less likely to get in trouble 😀
