A specific age group of people who run through the woods to stalk their seemingly adulterous neighbours. I’d be fleeing to Oz too… 🙂

What is it you want to know exactly?

Is there an association between people migrating from countries with a high prevelance and an increase in HIV rates in the UK? Yes is the answer.

As a caveat - a large proportion of those cases are from people who have previously been diagnosed abroad (hence the sharp jump post Brexit as we've seen a big increase in people travelling here from Africa). These people will be treated with what are now pretty inexpensive medications and are therefore extremely unlikely to have a high enough viral load to pass the virus on - even if they are having regular unprotected sex with multiple partners.

Rates are actually going down in people born in the UK.

So it's a complex conundrum with lots of moving parts. But that's a brief summary for you.

Presumably, this will also apply to many European countries, especially ones with Mediterranean borders.

Loads of boats coming across.

Whole continent needs to wake up.

It amazing how far we come with these drugs, so many of my mates are in PrEP.

Got one mate caught HIV in the 80s and has no idea how he survived when so many of his friends died and now due to modern drugs has a near zero viral load.

It's a really treatable illness nowadays. Nothing like what it used to be.

I'd genuinely prefer to have HIV over diabetes or heart disease now PrEP is around.

As a prophylactic or as a treatment it's remarkable. People with HIV can't pass it on - and people without it are very unlikely to contact it. Very few side effects and means that people with HIV have a life expectancy pretty much on par to those without.

Indeed. I got made redundant in 2012. One of the main income streams for the company was their HIV portfolio. The new drugs coming through, even back then, blew that division out of the water. The progress in that therapy area has been quite remarkable

As an aside, in 1987, just after I'd started working as a pharma rep, I used to organise meetings for GPs in Stockport. This particular group of Indian-heritage GPs asked for the local microbiologist from Stepping Hill hospital to speak to the them on the new-fangled AIDS epidemic. He was a mad old bastard who favvered Magnus Pyke. Their faces when he went into great detail about how the disease spread in the early days - mattress parties in San Francisco, the splitting open of anuses due to the fisting, multiple bummings, his vivid descriptions of semen, blood and shite.... Their pomposity about gay whiteys will live with me 😁

No, I can't say I have. Last time I was in Scarborough, I just went to the water park then had a walk down the seafront.

He used to have to go and get his skin looked at every 3 months due to skin cancer which if you have HIV is a problem more than it would be apparently but now does have to do that even.

As I say though, he still doesnt know why he survived when so many others died. He just thinks hes one lucky fucker with whatever genes he has

They'll be throwing open the doors to their spare rooms won't they? A la Saint Gary of Lineker?
