Duck Egg Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 Went today. Fanzone was great. Beers and food lovely. Then the novelty of buying a beer and taking it on to the terraces was awesome. Game? Meh. It'll never catch on. Zero atmosphere as body builders all barge each other about a bit for a go on the egg. Not for me Quote

Last World Cup they were £10 now they are about £40 in most stands. Just not sustainable for a northern sport. A bloke I know from Widnes did about 8 matches last time with his 3 kids but now the same would be over £100 a game. Last time it was about £25 A world cup shouldn't need marketing Not sure doing so would fill the grounds Seems like they've decided to try and milk the hardcore fans with the prices Quote

If non RL folk don't know about it, they're less likely to pop along out of curiosity. Quote

Because it's popular and lots of people are watching it, so everyone wants to cash in I'd go so far as saying the actual WC isn't marketed that much at all, but lots of other things are done so off the back of it RL just isn't a big draw, anyone who likes it is going if the price is right I caught some of the Australia v Scotland game at Coventry, there was barely anyone there, no amount of marketing was getting day trippers in if the prices are daft Quote
royal white Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 I might be wrong but Rugby league attendance's at club level seem to be a lot better than Rugby union yet when it comes to the national sides it’s reversed. Quote

That's mostly to do with rugby league starting as a collection of clubs in the north when it split from rugby union. It didn't have the infrastructure or the influence that rugby union had in other countries and the rugby union authorities would never allow it to spread like rugby union did. Rugby union was "amateur" until 1995, which is probably why the focus in that sport is on the international teams. Quote

RL is England's shinty. Quote
ErnestTurnip Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 Think the rugby union premiership averages 50% more than super league across the board but might be wrong. Union in our part of the world had the 5 nations as competitive international fixtures every year without even thinking about tours so it was always front and centre for them. Quote

RL is England's shinty. Seemed there were quite a few RU types at the game last night tbf. That area is a weird one as RU is their RL if that makes sense, followed by plenty of working class types in Coventry/Leicester/Northampton etc. Shinty is an extreme comparison though. Not even close to a fraction of RL’s footprint. Gaelic Football is the worthwhile comparison you’re looking for. 11 minutes ago, ErnestTurnip said: Think the rugby union premiership averages 50% more than super league across the board but might be wrong. Their hardcore areas are comfortably in the south west and midlands with poorly supported outposts elsewhere. No different to RL with Lancashire/Yorkshire in that case. On the whole crowds are pretty similar but the likes of Leicester and the several Twickers jamborees massively drag the average up. Quote

Bolton Caledonians if memory serves And rugby, both codes, has always been a game for fat lads who are shit at football. Quite like watching it though. Quote
ErnestTurnip Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 2022 super league average was 8356, premiership 21/22 was 12841. Quote

I’ve always wondered why there’s not a professional side from Bolton. I was listening to Jamie moore (boxer) talking to Adrian Morley (rugby league) a few months back about injuries, a rugby player being tackled at full force is equivalent to car crash. Some players are taking over 20 big hits a game! Not as bad as those football injuries from heading a ball though 🙄 Quote

ErnestTurnip Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 (edited) Honestly have no idea, not sure that gets factored into average attendances though. A lot of them are struggling, if Leeds reported a loss of 2.5million for their last accounting period then they won't be on their own. I'm pro RL and always have been, not sure I've ever been pro the way it's been run or marketed although there must have been some good bits of administration over my lifetime. If you look at the RL towns this side of the pennines, historically they didn't a league football club. It was like the two couldn't exist side by side. Quote

Sweep Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 We were offered 4 "premium seats" free of charge for the semi final at The Emirates Stadium last night. Its on Saturday 12th November, so they're certainly dragging this tournament out. I'd have gone, but my other mates said they'd rather not, so we turned them down. The bloke offering this tickets said he's been trying to get rid of them all week and is struggling a bit. I'm not sure why they think having a semi final in London is a good idea, surely having it in somewhere like Wigan, Widnes or Hull would be better would it not? Quote
Spider Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 I think RL is wasting its time trying to expand into areas like the midlands and the south. Focus on the areas that follow it and invest there instead, strengthen what they have. The attendance at Coventry proves what a dead horse they’re flogging. Maybe try and push into places like Bolton, which could probably muster a pro setup Quote
