If he was wearing a pakistani flag in his hair and his accent was fuck all like Boltonese........ Then yeah, I'd ask about his family history

Fair enough .

I'm on the fence with this.

I can see why the old bird would ask and I can see why t'other woman might take offence.

Anyway, she's 83 what the fuck is she still 'working' for.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting it’s racist to ask someone where you’re from, especially if English isn’t their first language. We all do it and it’s normal friendly conversation. The problem

Aye maybe.

however, your superior attitude on this will turn folk right off

theres fuck all offence meant when i ask somebody where they are from

if somebody is offended, fair enough, say so and don't answer

with me, its just a genuine interest, and yes, if they say blackburn, if i could be bothered with them id follow up with a question on heritage

i think what im saying is you dont get to decide whats racist

nor do you have to be black

if somebody asked me where i was from, id say bolton and if they pushed beyond that id say ive not a clue

Couldn't give a shit. If folk are defending nonsense like this then I'm happy to call it out and turn them off. If that makes people think I'm being 'superior' that's their issue, not mine.

I'm not deciding anything. That line of questioning is clearly offensive, if folk don't know that, they probably need to listen a little more and speak a little less.

Someone’s got to pay the taxes to cover the cost of all those white Albanians coming in 😉

Yep.

The offended women didn't think she should have to resign.

Although she was the Queen's lady in waiting. With the Queen gone  should she be pensioned off.

Unless the corgies still need walking what's she actually doing now?

Good place to be; we’ve heard one side of the story, which seems to have become an acknowledged truth. Given the general position of the Royal family, to neither explain or apologise (I think), we my never see the other side. Yours is an understandable and, in my view, appropriate place.

Bet an Albanian would do it cheaper.

Ok, then we will disagree on that point and leave it at that - no point going on about it.

It might not seem offensive to us but to non-white folk it can be, especially those who are multiple generation British.

well, use the opportunity to educate, ffs

This is how she was dressed at the event.  Is that an Ethiopian flag in her hair?

She can get to fuck.

If this old bird is racist then she needs fucking over for 'cultural appropriation' as someone Mancunian through and through.

If you ask Amir Khan (I know, I know) where he's from he'll tell you he's from Bolton but his heritage is Pakistani.

Shes a dick

see that's a fair point too

if she's dressed like that, then why not ask where she's from

but

not "really" from, like you don't believe her

asked her where her style orginates from, compliment her look, say you'd like to know more about her origins

it's like saying "where you from?" "hackney" "well you're not really are you, look at you"

but she's 82

that's how it was back then

see Prince Phillip

To be fair, I thought she did on the Today programme.

I can see this going the same way as that cricketer who complained about racist abuse then a few months later it came out he was a racist.

In other news.

I've read that the new Netfix seies "Wednesday" is also racist.

A black actor has been cast as a bully.

Now, I know nothing of the acting community or process but dont you have to audition......  As in they turned up knowing the role and gave it their all.

I’ve got a number of British born Asians where I live. It’s more important to them than me whether they of Pakistan or Indian heritage. Speaking to them during the T20 World Cup clarified it for me. We won by the way. 😊

Well she got what she wanted, attention and offended.

Exactly what she was looking for and the outraged mob, including the BBC, leapt on it with glee. What a fucking joke.

I don't say these words too often. I agree with Casino.

I'll bet that this article used tweets from people who were offended to make their point

as it often the case these days

the actors and all that won't have given it a 2nd thought

but someone watches, sees something they don't like, tweets it, gets some likes and retweets and all of sudden this is representative of public opinon

Been watching it with my daughter and it's just good telly for fucks sake.

Explain.

There's some folk who believe that to even ask the question is racist.  It's a shame that it'll get asked less now because it's a reasonable ice breaker in a conversation and it gives the person a chance to chat about their heritage and roots if they choose to.

She's a daft old bat though for pursuing the line of questioning when it clearly wasn't welcome.
