We started slowly & looked like we had lead in our boots .Both wingbacks were the exception.They cut through us box to box far too easily which is a feature of championship football , however we worked it out on the pitch & got ourselves into the game before halftime.After Evatts ht team talk we were far more aggressive & the turnovers in midfield increased in our favour. The goals were excellent & no reason not to expect Dempsey bagging a few this season.Dan the man was disappointing though & he needs to improve which hopefully he will. Ashworth doesn’t look quite ready but Forrester looks decent and scored a very cool goal which to be fair Dan had a hand in. Vic unlucky not to score & if he can bring that sort of turn & shot regularly we might yet see him registering goals regularly . Central midfield slight worry , think George is definitely squad but we need someone better as I think most of us know. No evidence to suggest Sadlier has a future here & as for John well unless he’s injured his bags must be packed.

👍 He was very talented at schoolboy level & as you say was quite small , midfield was his domain, played against him a few times , he was a nightmare to mark. Somehow didn’t get picked up by any club & he served an apprenticeship at Metal Box in Westhoughton whilst playing weekend footy. Ended up playing for Chorley on the wing but by now he was six foot plus , think he broke his leg & nearly jacked it in .Tony Waiters was the guy who spotted him at Chorley & took him to Plymouth.Great achievement for him even to make grade , but the rest is an unbelievable achievement culminating in playing for England.

When doing tv interview after the 1-0 win at Burnden in which he scored the only goal, the commentator said something like ‘that was a big relief getting through a tight game’ Trevor replied that the big relief for him was that Gerry McCleneny wasn’t still stood at the back of him. Top Bloke TF.

Watched them a couple of times on the box last season, made me realise how far we were off that level ie speed of attacks box to box & not hoof ball either.

Well that’s your opinion fair enough , notwithstanding he reversed the downward path the club was on when he took over.Never easy when the wheels are off & you take over a club in decline , which we were at the time. Oh & the comments regarding ‘disillusioned’ players are neither here nor there ,most clubs have a disaffected few. As for ‘siege mentality’ he had that in spades that first season . So we agree to differ.

You must be joking , before the season started the consensus was that he would do a brilliant job just to keep us up. No credit given whatsoever for getting us promoted from league one in the first place , I get you didn’t like him or his style of play but lacking spine ???

Dabo despite missing the pen in the playoff final was very well thought of at Coventry , would be a very positive signing for us.

My earliest recollection of Wigan Athletic was at Grundy Hill watching them as visitors play the RMI , I think is was some sort of cup game & the ground was pretty full. Wigan I concluded were a big non-league team capable of attracting a few thousand fans. Essentially my opinion of them hasn’t changed .In the eightes when we hit more or less rock bottom (up to then it was rock bottom) we began to play them on a more regular basis & some sort of mild rivalry ensued , I worked with a loyal Wigan fan at the time & he was sound .Hated the rugby club though which I thought was perverse.We always took over at Springfield park it was like a visit to a less well off neighbour, although they had a few decent players. In my job I moved around a lot & met many PNE Burnley & Rovers fans all of which liked good natured banter based on genuine football rivalry. Then I got a job in Skelmersdale .There were a couple of Wigan fans worked there & all I got from them was vitriolic hatred dressed up as banter , because I was a contractor I had to watch my p’s & q’s but it was hard not to respond to them.In the end my contract ended & I left but my opinion of Wigan fans changed completely . As far as I’m concerned they need to recede back to what they were & maybe the likes of Chorley can give them a good hiding.

Another tactical mystery is why with only five minutes left , & the fairly statuesque but tall Jerome on , do we not shove Santos forward & sling crosses in like every other team does In similar circumstances, second balls etc. Our long list of 0-1 defeats would be much shorter if we went agricultural for the last minutes of a game , surely ?

Definitely for me too , Jones is top notch tactically gets the best out of Bradley not as good a defender as Toal but streets ahead in terms of positioning & making the right runs ,might have been a tough one last night with that shithouse Kane lumping & bumping Bradley .Certainly missed last night. Our left-side looked more productive in the second half , & I can’t understand why John didn’t take that titty line freekick, crying out for a left pegger ,maybe he just wasn’t arsed?

Think that was Denis Smith he liked to take on numbers , once rescued a few of us at Boro. Saw him a good few years ago in WS upper. Obviously quietened down a bit. Franny Lee hatrick game was 1967 .Sir Rogers debut later either 69 or 70. He didn’t score that day , & I for some reason wasn’t there.
