Please read the original comment, not just the reaction of other posters. I think there have been plenty of 'scouse' suggestions in recent days and as I say maybe my reaction to the original suggestion would have been better kept to myself until a little time had run out. A couple of points though - I accept that the 'ex-player who killed himself' was no Wanderers legend (like a Bobby Moore was for WHU) but his death was shocking to all of us and the coincidence of this happening to a player wearing the same shirt number (less than 6 months later) is a little too strange for me. I don't know what Fab's % chance of survival was at the time of the incident but considering it happened at a prem league ground it was probably a little higher than the other lads who passed away so I think that he and we are fortunate that the suggestion can seem so ridiculous to some (most) and that he is not another entry into the Wikipedia page of retired shirt numbers.

I'm not sure how a sentimental gesture of respect can be described as 'chavtastic' - it seems to be the opposite to me but maybe I don't really understand what the word means ... I actually get the reluctance to retire shirts as in some contexts it is indeed ridiculous but at this moment it feels appropriate to me, given this awful event and the death of Speedo. Maybe I will feel differently in a few weeks or so.

It is certainly great to see the progress that the lad is making and whilst he may not play again we can all now hope that he goes on to lead a relatively normal life. That didn't seem possible a few days ago. I was out of the country when it happened and so was removed from much of the drama (seems an inappropriate word). Since I have been back I have tracked his progress on SSN etc and I have been both emotional and uplifted by the way the football world in general has shown support for their colleague. I think most will now want the game to go ahead this weekend now so we can build on the hopefully continued good news and show our own local support for one of our own. I'm not normally a sentimental type but if he does not play again I agree with the retire the number 6 comment, seems appropriate after the events of the past 6 months.

Taking credit for saving us from relegation (and then those damn indivual errors have led us right back in it), taking credit for attention to the academy that will bear fruit (and welcoming the board's recently appointed Sammy Lee). Introducing a new model and taking credit for spending money on young players who will improve, not proven talent that in the past gave us short term success ... I would imagine his largest investment is Petrov? and then we have Holden (I'll give him that), Klasnic, Wheater, Mears, Eagles, Blake, Pratley (others?). N'Gog and Alonso may improve but I'm personally not too concerned that he didn't get a tranfer pot of 50 mil (despite his eye for talent). The other young uns that we have invested in have all been developed for the long term benefit of others. Sure, its cheaper than getting older players but still a 'short term fix'. I get nothing from that article that persuades me that the fella has a clear view of what it is he is actually doing (other than hoping as much as possible that we somehow survive this season, because he really believes it).

I wouldnt say he is the best English candidate at all. England don't have the number of world class players that other countries have so the best we can hope for is a manager who can gets the best out of what he has got (Redknapp ticks that box) and set up a tactical plan to play to the strengths of his team and weakness of the opposition (I don't think Redknapp has demonstrated he can do this). Allardyce in my view has proven he can do both better than Redknapp.

I think we have to nip any hint of nostalgic Megson nonsense in the bud. He oversaw us surviving relegation despite demotivating a much more talented bunch of players than the ones assembled by Coyle. I personally could not give a shiny shit about him getting sacked from Wednesday and couldn't care less where they are in the league, all I know is I have never been so happy to see the back of a manager once he was bounced out of the Reebok.

Referees simply taking names down in their books and pointing to the tunnel rather than dramatically waving yellow and red cards about. An improvement is the PA guy simply reading out the half time scores rather than you having to work out a complicated alphabet scoring system on that huge cricket scoreboard type thing and cross matching it with your programme..

I only heard the sad news on Mon as I have not been around much. I remember the lad from years ago (and his brother) and bumped into him from time to time. I hope he gets a good send off today, RIP ...

For those of you without bin lids I would recommend the Makadi Palace resort in Hurghada. Three different hotels / sites, very good standard restaurants, beach, pool and rooms .. We went in Nov 2010 - temp 25 plus ... Didn't leave the resort for the whole week and managed with just one day of the shits. Will defo be going back at some stage.

Footballers always seem to look smaller in 'real life' don't they? Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan were on my flight on Tue and bizarrely they both look bigger than I imagined they would. I had the misfortune of watching the match last night with colleagues in cloggie land. The subject of effeminate footballers came up and one of girls immediately named (and shamed) Chris Eagles. I hadn't realised that he spent time at NEC Nijmegen. His rep is Europe wide .. Was also told an amusing story about a Dutch goalie who ended up playing over here. He went through a rather nasty divorce and his wife posted a video of her 'butt fucking' him on some website or other ... Not sure if thats a well known story over here but I hadn't heard it. There but for the grace of god and all that ... I'd be sad to see them go to the wall tbh, good football town is Pompey and at the end of the day the fans don't deserve this (no football fan does but I can think of other clubs I wouldn't be sorry to see go). I lived there in the early 90's and I recall the fans being bullshitted to then about a new ground etc and it escalated when venables took over and has been a disaster ever since (tho they had a good cup day out).

who knows? a lot of noise, i do remember that. even so, younger players with an onsale value. its the wages that is the big problem, you see them going up sharply year on year. next season is a step change down.
