We were on a no expense spent Geography field trip from Westhoughton Comp one afternoon in the early 80s, looking at old buildings around Howfen town centre.  The teacher pointing at a house just off Leigh Road said "Can anyone tell me what kind of property this is?"

"Frannie Lee's cottage Miss!"

Pretty humble beginnings he came from.

I didn’t know that. He’s old school entrepreneur then.

My bad it was Willie Morgan who played for united.

Fantastic player, a true legend and I still remember the day he damaged his cruciate against Everton in that snowy Christmas match. It also cost the club because he was all lined up for a big money move which obviously never transpired and we got nothing like the same when he went to City. RIP Franny the best penalty taker I’ve ever seen.

??? You're mixing him up with Peter Reid.

RIP

Im thinking so, surely? Cant have happened twice, in the snow, at Christmas, against Everton?

Was at Anfield in 1967 when he put us 1-0 up in the league cup but Peter Thomson equalised- beat them 3-2 in the reply. Me and another kid was in the boys pen and was lucky to get out alive after he celebrated our goal. 13 year old

Firstly RIP Franny Lee, a genuine legend of the game, well before my time for BW but great memories of his games in the mid 70s for City and Derby.

Great story from you, I love the fact that they had a boys pen, obviously girls were at home playing with dolls.

I went to the replay with my old fella, I was about 7 or 8 so I can’t remember the players but I remember knowing it was a big win for us. As many have said on here, the best penalty taker I’ve ever seen

“My bad”?

I don’t think anyone has ever said that to me. Cheers Swanny.

The Ballard of Frannie Lee

By Mark and Lard

Him and Freddy Hill were the earliest memories I have at Burnden

There was them two, Syd Farrimond, Warwick Rimmer, John Hulme, Johnny Byrom, Wynne Davies and more around about the same time. Characters every one.

Aye great goal he scored typically from distance , Eddie Hoppy had a blinder I was 14 yrs old on the Anfield rd end & told in no uncertain terms to keep my head down by an eighteen stone ‘docker’ when celebrating our goal.

On the way home we sang ‘we’ve just hammered Liverpool doodah doodah’

Freddie Hill was the undoubted star of the replay which we won 3-2.

Frannys back heel goal whilst leaning on the post at Deepdale is etched in my memory forever.

We sold him cheap , but it was the right move for him

RIP Franny.

I don't need to, I've heard it referenced many times, just makes me laugh.  I've seen pictures of turnstiles from the same era with the prices shown as "Boys" rather than juniors.  Different times is an understatement.

My dad used to live just down the road from Stanneylands, so went past it a lot. He mentioned he owned it, but not sure if he lived there or if it was just for the horses.
