Fucking freezing at the best of times, but totally unheated if you did the lifesaving classes after hours. Diving down for a rubber brick etc. Only good thing about that was it was mixed and the lasses changing area was open plan 😃

Probably wish I’d known that about the after hours 😀. Hated that pool so much my mum enrolled me at Horwich Leisure Centre swimming which was lights years difference. And the teachers weren’t quite as suspect

Aye; one day we turned up with cossies ready for swimming and he decided it was long jump day. So just dressed in trunks we got marched down to the long jump pit. Lasses playing rounders were pissing themselves. Nothing odd about that change of plan at all was there? Or the time one lad forgot his trunks and so same teacher made him swim naked.

ah yes, the tanking. To the uninitiated, this involved him back handed slapping boy's bare bottoms in the changing rooms. I sincerely hope he ended up getting done. Cunt.

Back then there was also violence. Sometimes deserved e.g. when I got battered with a big metal ruler after making a kung fu fighting star in metalwork and lobbing it across the room at my mate. But other times, well that lad got slapped full in the face ( by a teacher) on a coach back from some trip or other after he slagged off BWFC (he was a City fan) and then his nose broken after his head being slammed into the desk by a different teacher. But then again there were some cracking teachers and one who directed my career by encouragement, and if he's still with us I'd thank to the bottom of my heart.

It was a different world.  I left in '81.

Jack S it was for metalwork - top bloke and I thoroughly deserved the battering he gave me 😃 In his lesson I made a trowel that my old mam used to flick dogmuck into next door's garden with. Proper good, hand crafted and riveted  - the trowel, not the dogmuck.
