ianofcleveleys Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Messing about in the loft and found a fair few programmes from that season, this was one. Paul Jones with a thumping header. Reason for the messing about was finding out the other day I've very loose family connection with Mike Walsh, came into the side a bit later, in 1974, very much a part of our happy days in the back half of the 70s. Whitestar Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 My 1st season going to Burnden was that promotion season but i can never remember that clock on the roof as in the program pic. Quote

Had a look back through a few more progs from the era, it was still there in season 75/76. The 'Steelwork Booth Bolton' sign was a sight I remember pretty well Quote
ianofcleveleys Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Another from early in 72/73, JB sliding in a goal. I used to stand on the Embankment, just below the scoreboard Quote

I also remember it as the day Johnny Aston shithoused for 90 minutes & became hated for a decade, often by fans who could not possibly have been there. Fckg Manc reject. Seriously, the reason I pleaded for my eldest grandson not to be called Aston. I failed. I console myself with "Nah, it's a reference to Aston Martin". He is not into any sport other than motor sport (cars and bikes in general) so I am managing to convince myself. Quote

At the previously discussed Blackpool away game Mike Walsh, still a junior, had travelled with the squad. Around 2.30pm a tannoy message was sounded requesting him to attend the players dressing room. He was in the stands & he went as requested. As the players came out to warm up he was there with them. Later it emerged that Steve Taylor (Road-Runner 'beep-beep') had gone missing. He turned up a couple of days later having been in a hedge, pissed. iirc Walsh was made sub & the sub, whoever that was, played in Taylor's place. Quote

Pretty shitty name tbh though. Martin would have worked vastly better. I guess your being called Vauxhall didn't help your case. Quote

Blackpool had their own Mick Walsh around that time too didn't they? Think he was their star man for a couple of seasons but don't remember him ever making it at any higher level. Quote

They did indeed, scorer of BBC's goal of the season in 1974/75, a curler from well outside the box in a home match at Bloomfield Rd. Had a good career, went to Everton then QPR, then had six years at Porto, played in a Cup Winners Cup Final for them Quote
Whitestar Posted April 15, 2025 Posted April 15, 2025 Ok, cool. I didn't know that but only remember him at Blackpool. Quote
Whitestar Posted April 15, 2025 Posted April 15, 2025 Weird what football trivia you can remember from the 70s, Wasn't Duncan McKenzie famous for a party trick where he would jump over a MGbgt??? Quote

He scored a wonder goal, goal of the season in 1975. 180 games for them, then Everton, QPR & onto Porto. Being Chorley born he got 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland. Not avbad career. A mini. He also threw a golf ball the length of the pitch at Elland Road. Met him at a promotion a few years back. He was carrying a pic with him mid vault. Quote
