Caught up in the modern tactics speech, which I agree can be nonsensical at times. 😂

But to continue on the same speak to make a point, it’s the difference between what some managers call a single or double pivot at the base of your midfield.

First diagram is your one 6, two 8’s. Second diagram is your two 6’s and one 10, which we have gone with so far this season.

(forget the player numbers on the diagrams they are just random! 😂)

That second diagram is more like 2 sixes and 1 eight. The 10 is more a support striker i.e. the middle of the 3 in the 4231 which is what we've been playing.

I agree though, the sixes should really be referred to as fours.

number 6 were the ones with 2 diagonal stripes on a white packet, number 10 were instant cancer, and number 45 is fucking useless.

Beyond that, I'm a bit lost.

Think that bottom one would suit us when we are away...At the moment the two wingers and Burstow pick themselves

Would like to see Sheehan in the centre just in front of Simond and Ehrahon....No one is making that ten their own i would rather see us more with three in midfield than the current two

Right having had a good think about it I think SS should go with the following for the Barnsley game

1,4,6,6,8,9,10,6,2,8,6

What a load of shite

The pundits etc go on about transition ffs football is a simple game .

1/2 and 1/2

I don't think you're allowed to say that anymore.

Its hard to judge if they've played well.  Plymouth may as well have picked the ball up and placed it in the back of the net 3 times for all Barnsley had to work for their goals.  And they were 2-0 at home to Burton till the 2nd half so not exactly dominant.

They have some good players though (Keillor Dunn, McGoldrick, Josh Earl, Phillips, Connell).  They also have Ogbeta!

Tough game but I'd expect us to be better than them.

They've got two wins.

Therefore they have started well.

Quality of play, is somewhat irrelevant.

If we can play poorly and win the next 44 league games, I'll take it!

Ok

1/4+1/4 and 1/4+1/4

They’ve just been incredibly lucky up to date which stops on Saturday when they play a proper team.

Their young Twitterati are scared of our wingers, think they'll have their work cut out with them. They certainly have some assets going forward though. Keillor Dunn is one I like

I read that as keeper/right back and keeper/right back.

could be right half and left half, but that's before my time.

Whilst that may be true, over a season the better teams tend to be the luckiest.

Those two wins will have given them confidence, and they had good wins last season over us.

I hope you're right, but we've both only played a couple of games, and I don't share your faith as to how good we are, yet.

Even SS has said it will take a few games to get up to speed.

In this scenario, you’re playing with “6’s” in front of the back four, but you don’t generally play an “8” when you have a ‘double pivot’ ie; two 6’s

So your 8, plays higher up to become a 10

In this scenario, you’re playing with one ‘6’ (single pivot) so will have 2 more midfielders in front of him. Generally two ‘8’s’ who will be more box to box and defend more than a 10 would

I realise how boring that was…

That would be my preference too. Maybe Erhahon to replace either Morley or Sheehan and a shift for who  would go at the base.

I do think SS will stick with Randall in the 10 role though.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tutu stay at RB too

I dont think he’ll play that shape and I was just using the lineup of an example. I reckon he’ll stick with his 4-2-3-1 and have Simons & either Morley or Sheehan alongside with Randall, or McAtee ahead.

I’d start McAtee personally. Last chance saloon against his former team. Ask him to be a absolute pest and if he doesn’t, maybe we decide it’s not working out

How many times can we ask him to do what he was brought in to do?

Being a pest isn't a particularly technical quality- just an effort one.

As we saw last season, he can finish, but he just doesn't affect the game often enough.

I don't get the objection to using numbers for positions. The language of football moves on and if someone is going to chat in those terms it's surely better to know what they mean than not.

I'm sure "right back" and "left winger" would have felt like new terminology when that language emerged but I view those as the norm. I'm too old to talk in terms of numbers but I know what they mean and kids these days will be talking about 6, 8 and 10s and it'll become the new norm.

It is already being used more and more.

Given there was already a nomenclature in place though, why change it?

Using language also allows for nuance too, whereas a number doesn't.

Teddy Sheringham was a deeper lying striker for England.

Sometimes he'd move around to link play.

Loads of subtlety to describe the differences between players.
