Easier to write: Teddy was a 10?

I don't get the objection to using numbers for positions. The language of football moves on and if someone is going to chat in those terms it's surely better to know what they mean than not.

I'm sure "right back" and "left winger" would have felt like new terminology when that language emerged but I view those as the norm. I'm too old to talk in terms of numbers but I know what they mean and kids these days will be talking about 6, 8 and 10s and it'll become the new norm.

I think as highlighted on this thread people have different ideas of what the numbers mean.

In the old days a 6 was definitely a centre half  for instance. Neil Whatmore for me always played 8. Frank was 10.

It is ironic that the move to use numbers has happened since squad numbers came in making the number references even less relevant.

Was much easier in old days when everyone played 4 4 2 .

What number describes a proper midfielder who runs up and down and tackles everyone ?

3000 sold for tomorrow,  bit poor I,d say.

Would think it will be close enough to 3.5k with pay on the day.

Nothing poor about a L1 team taking 3.5k away fans anywhere in my opinion - shows the progress in the fanbase that it’s even being discussed.

Seems Dalby may get on the bench.....Wonders who will wear the number 19 and join Schon and Gomes in the clubhouse

Hopefully Taylor,Cissoko and the new Forward[Kenny] will  soon take three more places in the team/bench and we then will see who is staying and who is going

68...

Yeah, when I grew up it was 6 for a defender and 4 in midfield. I think these 6, 8 and 10 descriptions have been a global influence as new formations have emerged the last 20 years. Chat to any Spanish and they'll think a 6 is a midfielder and Real Madrid were pretty much the starting point for 4231 for about 15 years now.

Another thing is the 10 isn't like the usual 10 when I grew up watching 442, where the support striker, winning headers and doing some of the donkey work, i.e. Niall Quinn, Sheringham. You couldn't really call them 10s in the modern jargon.

Anyway, I've bored myself now. 2 nil win tomorrow, about time I saw a win at Oakwell

Aye.

I think criticising other fans' non attendance is out of order really.

Maybe some simply can't afford it.

The club could arrange an on-line scheme where those who can pay for tickets for those that can't... :)

It's probably a symptom of social media and over-saturation of football punditry as opposed to being inherently bad. But it does tend to lead to people - with extreme, irritating confidence - putting players in boxes with no room for any nuance.

It's weird because all this shite has been popularised by Pep, who moves his players around all over the place. Bernardo Silva must have played everywhere bar centre back and goalkeeper.

Beer on club coaches tomorrow, yay or nay?

Do/can they check your bag?

In this scenario, you’re playing with one ‘6’ (single pivot) so will have 2 more midfielders in front of him. Generally two ‘8’s’ who will be more box to box and defend more than a 10 would

Basically what we used to call players who track back when we lose possession?

pre mixed rum/vodka/gin etc or hip flask = yay

I'm not bothered, it's my mate who like a beer en route to a game

It's not a long journey to Barnsley- an hour and a half's abstinence would surely make for a more enjoyable drink once there?

It's the pigeon holing it promotes that gets my goat, 'he's an 8', 'he's a 10' 'he's not a 6' etc. Why not go the whole hog too and bring all the numbers in? 'He can play as a 9' or 'he's more of an 11 than a 3'. That'd properly scramble a few heads

It's not worth the risk....

It is 32 minutes on train from Leeds and we are taking 2 bottles each.

TBF we have a bit of time on platform at Leeds.

Whilst that may be true, over a season the better teams tend to be the luckiest.

Those two wins will have given them confidence, and they had good wins last season over us.

I hope you're right, but we've both only played a couple of games, and I don't share your faith as to how good we are, yet.

Even SS has said it will take a few games to get up to speed.

That's one of those over used phrases managers trot out at the start of the season (with reason).

I'm yet to hear a manager say its great that we've finally reached our peak and we won't be doing any improving from here  on😀

So its Barnsley (bedding in new signings and new manager) v Bolton (new signings, new system, newish manager).  Repeat next week v Reading and Lincoln.  By the time we've got a settled line up, everyone else will have too.

Strange how 3k is now considered the lower end of acceptable.

We used to take 500 to Everton and not many more to Liverpool (once the novelty had worn off).

They will.

I remember forest under clough though.

Always started relatively slowly and came strong.

It's rare that a team shoots off but stays there.

I think players can be over cooked- reckon Evatt did that- and get too many injuries by  being overtrained.

By the tail end of the season, they're burned out.

3k is an excellent turnout IMO.

3k to any away game isn’t poor

Like someone said above I think a few are just all Barnsley'd out.
