watching him on sunday with the ball, couldn't help remarking how poor he was

he can hardly kick a ball straight half the time

later on, he scabbed a goal, and i think it was his header that led to stelios scoring......

but on the whole, with the ball, i think he's largely ineffective

then, in the cold light of day, i watched the highlights, and got to thinking that his tackling and genral fighting for the team went a big way to turning the game around

so, is he a player too valuable to sacrifice, or is he just not good enough for a team with ambitions of challenging for regular top 8 finishes?

We play a certain way, him up front and 2 others by the side.

Get rid of Davies and we need to change the shape of our team, 4-4-2. If we do that we need 2 decent strikers, 1 could be Diouf the other?????

I agree with all of what you've said. There are more talented players but would they do the same unselfish job that Kev does?

What I would say is that we need an alternative target man - which is why I think Crouch would be a good signing for us. And could possibly do Davies' job - better.

But maybe he's too expensive.

In the absence of an alternative Davies does a fine job, the key I guess is to have players around him that get the goals, as Stelios and Diouf have done in the second half of the season.

All in all, he's been a massive part of what we've achieved this season. However, quite often he's got the touch of a rhino and the composure of Malcolm Glazer in the middle of Salford.

If we are looking to progress as a team, I'd say he should be a squad player at best next year. However, whom else can we get and if so will it change our style? Personally I thought we were better movement and passing-wise when Diouf was central up front.

If its not broken, dont try and fix it. They ALL work for each other in their own ways. We have just had our best season in decades, leave it be. I enjoy the way we play, then again i did under Colin Todd 8-[

That would work if the other teams were static too. However, do you think Everton, Wigan, Spurs, City etc will keep the same sides and not strengthen??

Also I think our way of playing may be too predictable if we don't have options.

(For the record I aint moaning, we've had a cracker of a season)

and its taken you 2 years to work this out!!!!!

davies is a complete donkey with the ball at his feet, but there is almost nobody i'd rather have leading the line, in the role that he does...

I think the not broken then don't fix it mode is sensible. We dropped for Southampton at home and with Diouf up front failed to win the game. I felt that we should have used Davies to batter their defence and then bring on Diouf to terrorise their weary legs. We changed for changing sake that evening and it didn't work.

Whilst he ain't scoring enough, he works very hard for the team, tackling back and defending at corners.

Saying all of that, I am still undecided. If we go for a formation change, then he might be the one to drop out of the starting XI.

Yeah it sums up his commitment, but it doesn't mean that he's neccesarily rightfully our number one striker next season does it?

I would give 110% every week, but that doesn't mean I deserve a shirt. At this level you have to be ruthless & if we can get better, so be it but that's far from a certainty anyway...

I thought it was Davies who turned the game. We get the ball through Everton on the floor but it seemed ot me that it was Davies' flick ons that made the difference.

Thats right.

You have to defend from the front and he sets the example. Granted we need an Andy Walker though

I'd sooner have Davies giviong 100% week in/week out that Okocha giving 70% when things aren't going right for him. I thought Davies was a threat for us on Sunday.............ask James McFadden :D

do we though, fair enough davies is only good for 10 goals, but then again so are the current wide men, diouf and stelios...

We keep taking about a 20 goal a season man, which with the money we have to spend is, I think is not realistic. Now if we could find someone say to get 15 - 16 goals a season (and that may cost us 4 to 5 Million) and the two wide nam add another 10 each then I think thats the best we can do. I also think that Speed and JJ will get more goal next seaion than this and that will also help alnog the way.

pedersen wont get near 10 goals again he has got to be the replacement for the 10 goal+ at least man

though id rather take a risk and promote vaz te givin him more chances than spendin 2-3 million on tryin to get diouf and camara here

reckon get diouf and we will be reet up front and fire off pedersen

Sam's a stats man so he's playing Davies every week based on headers and tackles won etc. John Terry had a lot of good stuff to say about our Kev.

But Sam will also have worked out that we have had the most shots on goal, opportunites missed than almost every other side in the League this year, and that's where Davies lets us down. I don't think there's room for Henrik anymore, Vaz Te will still need at least another season before he's effective as a first teamer, and Diouf's best role is as a wide player.

Therefore in addition to signing Diouf, we are a quality finisher short in our squad. Crouch is too similar to how we expect Davies to play but he can score so he's a useful purchase if the formation only allows for one up front. While I used to like Phillips, he didn't work well with Crouch for Soton this year. Perhaps his best days are behind him. As a strike partner with Davies, prefer to look at Forsell or Pandiani. Bellamy or Johnson would be other considerations but we'll not put our hands in our pockets.

Plus he is gorgeous!!! =P~

He did a good job Sunday, hope we do keep him. Been a great signing and for peanutts!

Well, only two teams in the league have a 20 goal man - And one of them got eleven pens and his team still went down.

Doubt we could afford the other.

Another reason why Nolan mustn't leave - we need his goals. Between him, Stelios, Diouf and Davies we have 40 goals I reckon, we only got 49 in total this season...(just 6 teams scored more than 50)

Without Davies' all round contribution we'd have finished near the relegation places last season. Hierro, Speed and Diouf would not have signed for a club threatened by relegation, thus Davies has helped to bring those players in which provided a springboard for this season's heroics.

Kevin Davies will never score 20 a season, but he's always good for about 10 and he'll create 15 for a decent finisher with his flick-ons.

When Liverpool were the best in Europe, it was said that Ian Rush was one of their best defenders, because he defended from the front. KD does exactly the same, he refuses to allow defences to settle, ask John Terry, English Player of the Year, if you're unsure!

Davies for England!

Ask Terry who is most awkward and difficult striker he has ever played against!!

Was in FHM!!
