I reckon that our current squad represents the most talented one since our time in the premiership. In the past we have had teams that include brilliant individuals viz, youri, JJ and Anelka.

But looking at the overall squad I think this is the finest we've ever had in the Premiership.......?

No our squad is to thin now, our first 11 may be the best first 11 we've had but not the squad

Im really not sure as jury is still out on quite a few mwmbers of our squad thus far,

Purgyenier

Makkapakka

Smalaric

Shittu

Davies (Mark) showed promise but to early to tell.

Cohin

Muamba

Stiensen (to some extent defo 1st choice at right back but jusry still out as far as im concerned)

Obejani

Sissons

Basham

Elmander (who i think if can stay fit will come good)

Established players such as,

Gardner

Davies (Super)

Jussi

Al-Habsi

Mccann

Are all main stays of the last few of what you could call a diffrent squad to current.

Cahill

Taylor

All have class that will shine through for a good while yet.

the rest of the squad

AOB

JOB

Hunt

Are all squad players who make up the numbers

So i feel although i would say that this squad has the best potential of our recent years i still feel that the season we qualifyed for ueffa cup 1st time round would be better on paper even if in the long term wouldnt have shown promise for the future.

How is it the jury is still out on Steinsson, who's played in just about every game and easily the best rightback we've had in years (albeit gets caught out occaisonally when he's off going forward), but not on Al Habsi?

Stiensen is a good signing and has indeed played most of the games still not sure i could class him in the greatest squad of the prem era is all.

And i didnt offer and opinion on al-habsi as you see he is just one who could be classed in all squads since big sam.

so why don't you comment on the thread question instead of picking holes in my opinion without offering your own view!

I was looking at our subs yesterday and with exeption of basham, I think they were all internationals. That suggest strength in depth albeit we are only little old Bolton Wanderers.

No doubt with time and a few additions to the suad it will prove to be a sucsessful one for Bolton wanderers.

That is more a conclusion drawn from the shite right-backs we have had and NOT due to Steinsson being outstanding.

IMO the best defensive right-back performance for me this season was Basham on debut at Arsenal and he even created our one and only clear chance of the game for Davies late on too!

(HERE WE GO:) Steinsson is looking more out of his depth with each passing week. Going forward he is pretty quick, links up OK and can (on the odd occassion) put a decent cross in but just like Mr Mendy before him, defensively he is looking dodgy.

He often loses his man, allows long cross field balls to drift over his head to the winger he is supposed to be marking, gets easily beaten on the over-lapping runs of the opposition, is poor at coming inside to cover the centre backs and his passing under pressure is poor.

I have said it before and will say it again, if it was Nicky Hunt putting in the poor to average perfomances week-after-week, like Steinsson is doing, the boo boys would have had him hung-drawn-and-quartered months ago.

The right hand side is our defensive weakness.

It was his fault for the goal!!

Harsh that. Yes he allowed his man to get the ball across but it was the other full back who was dazzled by the green boots of the scorer at the back post.

I cant even believe this debate is happening. A far as i concerned, steinsson is the best right-back bolton have had in many years and to even compare him to the likes of bernard mendy is absolutely obsene, just look at where mendy is now, not exactly achieved anything since his loan spell ended. I think i could get in that hull side.

I don't think so.

Take the Steinsson rose-tinted glasses off and just watch him in the cold light of day.

Don't get me wrong, he is better than Hunt but not by as much as the rose-tinted glasses wearers believe.

firstly, nicky hunt is a decent player

secondly, i highlighted the bit where you said he was weaker than samuel and thats what i said was dogshit

steinnson struggles partly cos davies aint very good as a defensive midfielder and HE loses his man

AGREED. Though i'd argue that Samuel though defensively better is also a weak link in the current side. Both are very poor in possession and considering that as full backs they probably receive the ball in more space than any other players in the team that is criminal. Steinsonn does a lot of chest thumping a la Nolan and can get forward but the points raised about his defensive frailties are spot on.

Defensively I stick to that, I think Steinsson offers more going forward than Samuel but IMO Samuel is the better defender.

Nicky Hunt has been very unlucky to be permanently out of the team. But for that injury before the Arsenal game he could have got the right back shirt back =@

The fact he put no pressure on the cross made it easier for the crosser of the ball to pick his spot, if you watch it again even if Samuel would of got in front of Bendtner he would of found it very difficult to do anything bar put it in the net himself.

Steinsson is the best right back we have had in the Premier League. Not perfect by any means but I think Yatesy's criticism is unwarranted. There are more pressing concerns than Steinsson. Overall I think he has been a very good signing, one of a number of current players good enough to keep us in the Premier.

Not sure we have the best squad yet but the signs are encouraging. The age has been brought down and with some decent solid signings in the summer it certainly could be. I would expect Megson to go back for some of the targets considered in January and get them at a better price as well. I'm thinking of the likes of James Morrison. Plus of course the flair midfielder we need.

Posted

I'd like to see a proper right hand sided midfielder signed in the summer. I agree when Steinson has Davis in front of him he is sometimes exposed by the overlapping full back. Someone like harper from Reading who is used to working in tandem with a full back and can help defend when Steinson is dragged out of position. I think someone on the right wing will give us more balance as we are very strong down the left side.

Posted
Mark Davies cost ?1m plus add-ons.

Morrison's likely to cost ?4m plus.

Is he that much better?

He would give us something
