Superb find!! Obviously I’d love my Dad to be still alive (sadly at 105 it would be wishful thinking) but it’s stuff like this that rings so many bells about stuff he told me By 1945 he’d be

Now my memory tells me you're only right from 85 or so onwards. In 83/4 and 84/5 there was nothing wrong with the way he dealt with crosses. That's the season when it all went wrong .... pretty soon after Neal arrived. Whether that's co-incidence or not I don't know.

Yeah I think its true to say Neal had no confidence in him and that likely affected his form.  I'm positive though that the criticism of his handling at crosses started well before Neal arrived.  A particular error stands out in my mind at Burnley away.  2-1 up with a few minutes left and he waved an arm at what should have been an easily collected cross and it cost us 2 points. 1984? I'm sure at the time that a lot of our support started to lose faith in him around that time.

Fair do's. Entirely possible it started before I thought.

That 2-2 at Burnley was in the middle of one of Neil Whatmore's periodic loan match returns I think. Sadly they won 1-3 at Burnden that season with two wingers called Grewcock and Hoskin tearing us apart. Lots of trouble that day too!

It was.  He nodded in our 2nd.  I think it may have been his last ever goal in our colours.

I remember Neil Grewcock and he did tear us a new one that day.  I think we may have tried to get him a year or so later.  Hoskin doesn't ring a bell though

He always looked a quality player against us but that Burnley side was shit and his career didn't go beyond Turf Moor after he'd signed for them. Probably reflects on the quality of our full backs!

I remember the end of Whatmore's loan spell with us in 83/4. It was a Monday night game v Plymouth and he was serenaded from all sides of the ground. Deserved it as well. There was a man who worked hard for Bolton and brought quality.

Against expectation I enjoyed that. All down to earth blokes - both Blackpool and Bolton. First time I've ever heard Bill Ridding and Willie Moir.

(Blackpool bastards)

Great find that. 👍

I wasn't recording our chat

Did he say how many medicals he'd taken and failed, and with who?

Probably on here somewhere. But here it is again. I've just sat through this and noticed a couple of things. The linesman for the corners was stood between the corner flag and the net. Was this common practice back then? Roger Kirkpatrick was a shit ref. The galloping sideburns made some very strange decisions. The none foul on Siddall then blowing for a freekick when the same thing happened to the Chelsea keeper. A foul against the Chelsea player in the first half when it looked more like a penalty for them. Brian Moore is a nob. OK the ref was pants but he tryed to blame the ref, linesman and football league for Chelseas defeat. Great save by Greaves by the way.

Hard to tell but it sounded like a few from Bolton there.

In the Bolton slums you look in your dustbin for something to eat find a dead cat and think it’s a treat, not heard that for years or straight after we scored, your gonna get your fucking heads kicked in, 2 good old chants from the 70s. And how good was TOMO?

were you there our last game in the 78-79 season, at Burnden, which was his last match - and it got announced and he came out doing his "trademark" diving motion?

I've a memory of another famous old ref making what everyone thought would be his last appearance at Burnden. It was late in 1979/80 when everyone knew we'd be going down. An avuncular old ref called Pat Partridge got good applause from a low crowd in a night match v Norwich in one of our five wins that whole season - 1-0. Wikipedia says he was subsequently allowed to do the 80/81 season so the old bugger got a polite Burnden reception under false pretences in the end!

Pat Partridge - funny how many old refs name's stay with you longer than some of the players!

Still, I guess if more players had been named after gamebirds we might remember them. Like Tony Woodcock or Dave Pheasant
