I'll order that then. Forgot just how funny Spike Milligan was. Found a little book of his poems, short stories the other week. I was howling laughing at some of them. Genius.

As well as " Adolf Hitler -my part ",there's "Mussolini -his part in my downfall " & "Rommel? Gunner who?". All funny.

 

Just started "The Corner ",the book all about "The Wire". Fascinating, but nearly 100 pages in & I'm not sure if it's fact or fiction !

Puckoon is the funniest thing I've ever read. There's a laugh out loud on EVERY single page. I like reading the Goon Show scripts too.

Homocide is better than The Corner, the books anyway. David Simon is a fucking genius.

 

Who said blood meridian? A slog but a worthy one. Child of God or Outer Dark are brilliant unsung McCarthy novels, but The Road does top them all

No, Was it anywhere near as good as "The Wire"? Strange thing is , on the cover & in the blurb to the book "The Corner" there are several references to "The Wire", but none to "The Corner".

I'm toying with the idea of one, but I'm not convinced the wifi/3g model (which I think is the one to get) is worth ?152. Serious price fixing going on here: it's the exact same price everywhere.

I was completely against the idea, as in, how can you take that on a beach and read for hours in the bright sunshine. But apparently you can. The batteries run forever and you can read the screen in bright light. I'm still not sure how cooking oil, sweat and sand will bear upon it. My sister swears by hers.

 

But then, she has tourettes.

I bought the non-3g version ?110 quid, and is quite easily the best gadget I have ever bought, you just upload your books from Amazon through a wi-fi connection, private or public.

 

They have gone against the grain designing a device that is pretty much for one function, reading, and it does this so well I cannot imagine buying another paper book.

 

I travel a lot so having the ability to pre-load books is excellent, I also have a daily newspaper subscription which is great for the commute to work.

 

The screen is black and white and is not back lit, just like a paperback, so if you need a lamp to read a book you need a lamp to read the kindle etc, however the benefit is being able to read it in bright sunlight no problems.

 

The battery life is outstanding and easily lasts 2 weeks with daily use from one charge, and all this in a device as small and light as a normal paperback.

 

I am not sure what the capacity is but everything is archived to Amazon so you can always recall anything you would like to read again, currently I have about dozen books loaded.

 

Obviously you always feel you are paying over the odds for books as you do not have a physical thing on your shelf, but get over this and the Kindle is a fantastic piece of kit.

I bought a Kindle 3rd ed. upon the release. It is a nifty device, however, the screen is slightly smaller than I think ideal. It's a crying shame the PDF support is so poor on the device (I think more Adobe's fault than Amazon's).

 

Don't bother with the 3G version. Coverage is (reported) poor abroad and it's practically useless for web browsing due to the low refresh rate. You can connect to wireless networks anyway if you wish to d/l a new book and how often do you want a new book on the whim, so desperately you must download at that instant?

 

Backlight (or lack of) isn't really an issue, but it would have been nice if this bit of tech had that facility. Books are typically on par with paperbacks, pricewise. Sometimes cost more or less. I've read about 20 books on it since I bought and have a massive list queued.

 

If you're quite an avid reader, it is a lot easier to have more than one book on the go as it recalls your last read page etc.

 

My honest opinion is that it is good but I wouldn't go as far to say it is unbelievable. I still read paper books as well. The Amazon library isn't that brilliant either, quite a few times I havn't been able to get what i'm after.

only about 200 pages in follow on from a previous trilogy.

The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns are both very, very powerful books.

 

Both are a proper rollercoaster of emotions.

 

I'd never read a book before that could make me well up before I read, firstly, The Kite Runner and then the other soon after.

 

If ever your missus gives you grief, force her to read a Thousand Splendid Suns. She'll appreciate life could be a LOT worse for her (albeit briefly no doubt).

 

... oh, and it would appear that Afghanistan was a pretty shit place to live under the Taliban. Just in case you weren't aware of that.

Also into audiobooks when walking or stuck in a traffic jam. Just finished "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich", nearly 60 hours long but great insight into Nazi Germany and WW2. If only we had stood up to Hitler in the mid-thirties WW2 might never have happened.

Anything by Jo Nesbo. Get yourself onto Amazon!

 

The same, very likeable, lead role all the way through. Twists and turns aplenty.. and all based in Sweden rather than your usual locations. HTH.

 

Edit: You would need to start with one called The Redbreast, otherwise the following two won't make much sense. Available, new from Amazon for 1p plus postage.

A great read. I have the hardback by William L Shirer. As you say, had they listened to some of the wiser ones around at the time, a lot of the death and destruction could have been prevented. 'Peace for our time'. A well meaning, naive fool (yes, I know. A Conservative one).
