Boothy Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 (edited) Would he not be tested more by playing for a shitter team rather than one of the top 5? We can see from past experience that ordinary players can be made to look very good when they play in a team of super stars. IMO, overlooking the little Club's players with obvious talent is almost as damaging to football as bringing in the Sugar Daddy Sheiks. Edited September 6, 2011 by boothybwfc
MalcolmW Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Cahill is the first Bolton player to score for England since Ray Parry (as suggested semewhere in the previous 30 odd pages). He scored at Wembley on his England debut agaist Northern Ireland on 18.11.59, almost a year after Nat's last England appearance. What probably happened on Saturday is that some hack in the press box (who may never even heard of Parry) said "Cahill's become the first Bolton scorer for England since Lofthouse" and everyone else noted that clever statement as fact. But it's all there on t'internet if you look hard enough. Unfortunately I don't have a Rothman's handbook for the time, but doubtless it's in there too.
Traf Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Cahill will never reach the heady heights of ray Parry, until he too has his own newspaper kiosk on Bolton precinct.

jazza Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I didn't see the Wales game tonight but I believe Gary did himself no harm again tonight, I watched Scotland struggle to a victory over Lithuania He must have added to his reputatuion with the Bulgaria and Wales games as an aside, I wonder when the last time he was part of a team that gained 2 clean sheets in a row... I haven't looked it up but it must be a while!

SpiritofBurnden Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Was it Nevin per chance? No it was some patronising jock journo called Ian Mcgarry. Monday Night Club 05 Sep 11: http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/5lfd#playepisode2 (Discussion about Cahill starts at around 0:29:00)
enzo gambaro Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Of him and Terry, he looked the better. I expect him to be flying for us after these two England appearances. Aye, I'd agree with that. Aside from three long crossfield passes when nobody was showing for the ball, he didn't do much wrong. Should have scored, mind.

ex_midlandwhite Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 he does this quite often, this is not of his better attributes, hes need to stop doing it imo. I'd argue that's a little bit harsh. He is very comfortable on the ball as defenders go. I nthe first 10/15 mins he must have had more touches than any other player on the pitch moving the ball around the back and into midfield, always dropping off to give Hart an easy ball, same in the Bulgaria game. Has little choice but to play a longer ball if no one shows for him and he is being closed down
enzo gambaro Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 he does this quite often, this is not of his better attributes, hes need to stop doing it imo. The ball has to go somewhere. If there's nothing else on, a hail Mary out wide is as good an option as any.

richbwfc Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Hopefully starting the last 2 games for England and performing well will show him that he doesnt need to be at a bigger club to play for England. Obviously he will want to be playing Champs League, but he should now see he can and will play for England whilst still at little old Bolton...
magic legs Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Would this work? Cahill signs a new contract with us but we loan him to Arsenal from January onwards. That way he gets to play Champs League football, Arsenal get a decent defender for the 2nd half of the season, we keep hold off our prize asset, and Arsenal (or whoever) will definitely pay the price we want in the summer when they can see he can play at that level.

MalcolmW Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Arsenal are far from sure to still be in the Champions' League after the group stage - or the Europa League either.

SnoopJohnnyJohn Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Why are Arsenal and Tottenham fans constantly under the impression that Cahill can agree a pre-contract in January? That can only happen between clubs in different countries. If they want to talk to him in January, they have to stump up the cash. Personally, I just have a feeling that he might re-sign. That might be heart over head though, to be fair.
tyldesley_white Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Arsenal are far from sure to still be in the Champions' League after the group stage - or the Europa League either. What some arsenal fans dont seem to get is 1 Is what you say 2 They may not even get a Champs league place next year. Europa league yes. 4 They may have a new manager by then 3 Cahill will go on a free at the end of his contract and it as been mentioned that some of the big boys will pay bigger wages then Arsenal because they will not have to pay us a fee (I can see utd looking if Rio has any futher set back with injures)

However, we all know that 'unofficial' talks take place and gentlemens agreements happen. Darren Pratley for example. Everyone knew he was joining us this summer.
