Traf Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I am, of course, going to regret asking you lot, but... I need to buy a PC, mine seems to be on its last legs. Therefore, what do you recommend for me, and I'd like it cheaper than chips. Secondly, once I've bought this bargain recommendation, other than using balloons, telekinesis or osmosis, what is the easiest way of transferring the files/programs I want to keep from old PC to new PC? Thanks in anticipation of the flood of useful advice. Quote

Thanks in anticipation of the flood of useful advice. Take the hard drive out of your old PC. Open up your new PC (should be just a couple of clips somewhere - easy to do). Find where your new PC's CD drive is attached to the mother board (should be a grey connection about 3 inches wide). Attach your old hard drive into this connection and boot up the PC. You should now be able to access that drive from 'my computer' and copy whatever you want from it over onto the C drive. I've done this a couple of times myself over the last few years, and if I can do it anyone can. Once done, simply connect everything back on your new PC the way it was before you started fucking about and you should be sorted. PS - If I've missed any steps above then someone please correct me. Casino Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 don't you need to change the pins in the hard drive from master to slave, or was that just in the old days? tbh, i'd just buy a 16gb memory stick for under 20 Quote

I've not had an issue with the pins. I'm a bit of a spaz nowadays when it comes to computers and the last couple of PC's I've done it on have been a few years old. Maybe brand new PC's are different...? Anyway, if you're not arsed about ?20 or so, I'd agree on the memory stick advice. Far less pissing about. Edited August 18, 2011 by DazBobParr Quote

liamBWFC Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 You could put your old hard drive into your new computer, depending on the connection. Your new computer will surely be SATA whereas your old computer may be IDE depending on how old it is. If it is an IDE then you can get a converter for it, http://www.maplin.co.uk/sata-to-ide-convertor-36036 Setting the master/slave on your IDE is easy, just look on the print on top of your hard drive and there will be a diagram of how you set the jumpers for master and slave, follow the slave ones and you will be sorted. Casino Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Drag and drop, both ways? yes sir obviously, you don't have to do it all at one go and could use a smaller stick external drive dvd owt really Quote
ZiggyStardust Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 16GB memory stick XP->XP - File & Setings transfer wizard XP->Windows 7 - Easy transfer wizard. Either will transfer your my docs, email, favourites plus all word docs, photos etc, desktop settings n all that jazz. Software is built into windows already. Run the software on the new machine, it will install onto the memory stick. pop it in t'old machine, run the instaled program, select what you want to transfer, wait a while, pop it in new one, hit continue, bobs your uncle. Traf Posted August 18, 2011 Author Posted August 18, 2011 Traf, Laptop pal or a MacBook Pro like me.... Need/want a PC for my "home office" and getting a laptop too. Can't afford Apple. The sites aren't quite raking it in yet! Quote
MickyD Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Can I ask a reet stupid question? If you were to put your old hard-drive into a new PC, wouldn't you also risk infecting the new PC with any undetected crap that may have been dormant on your old PC? Quote
HomerJay Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 technically yes but unlikely, just bang it in, the scan it before accessing any files on it. Quote
barryk32 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Just plug it in and have 2 hard drives. Why bother fucking about. Anyway, Homer get off here and get on my slingbox thing. Cheers. Quote
Traf Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 (edited) Right, enough of this hard drive swapping bollocks. I can't be arsed with that: it'll be a memory stick job, because (a) I've already got one of those and (b ) it sounds the easiest way. Now, find me a cheap (but not shit) PC. Nowack Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Hi-Speed-External-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B0001GYNJ2 I bought an external box which you simply fit your old internal hard drive into and plug into your USB. This then acts like an external storage device you can keep your photos and stuff on and not clog up your fancy new PC. Quote
Happy Wanderer Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Now, find me a cheap (but not shit) PC. You need to be more specific of what your requirements are, how dependant are you on it's speed, disk space, RAM, desktop or a tower etc Quote
Traf Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 You're right, of course, I should have been more specific! I was just seeing what people would recommend, but they didn't! I've got one now, thanks though. It's nothing special I needed: web browsing, running MS Office, Excel etc and web-page editing mainly. I ended up getting a Compaq CQ5302: 3GB DDR3 RAM 320 GB HDD Intel Celeron Dual Core E3300 (2.5GHz) with Windows 7 Home Premium I know it's not the best in the world, but considering I picked it up for less than ?190, I'm happy enough. I also took Casino's advice re: a laptop and went to Tier1 where I got: Compaq Presario CQ62-A10SA V series V120 / 2.2 GHz RAM 2 GB HDD 160 GB DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM Mobility Radeon HD 4250 WIRELESS : 802.11b/g/n Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 15.6" Widescreen LED backlight BrightView TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) for ?199. As with the desktop: not a world beater but they'll both do what I need them to do for now and I got change from ?390. Quote

Traf Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Aye, mine arrived the next working day too. Quote
