This Town Is Coming Like A Ghost Town...

What's going on? Had to venture into our Town Centre yesterday, Cattle Market has bit the dust, The York was shut and on Bradshawgate, all the block from the Bookies on the corner to the old BMW place is empty (Including The Leena - no great loss, the new indian restaurant up the road is good).

Over the road the news stand that's been there since forever has also shut up shop. Perhaps the declining sales of 'toddy mags', due to the internet, was the final nail in the coffin?

Is this sommat to do with the new bus/rail interchange they're planning? It's going to be almost as welcoming as the current 'Gateway to Bolton' (you know, the one way street leading out of town...)

It's embarrassing when the likes of Bury and even Wigan, are showing us up as a right shithole.

Yes Youri, I'm related to two officers and they want nothing for the best for our town, dedicated to the hilt :)

what have they done for this town BB? sweet fuckin adams ! :angry2:

Sometimes on match day I walk to the station via Rice'nThree and Chicken Kebab. If there's a better £3.20 to be spent anywhere I'd like to know. I could probably buy the bottom end of Bradshawgate for that

Boozers wise Wetherspoons is alright, Barristers, Man & Scythe (out of towners love the M&S) and I'll probably get crucified for saying it but the Dog & Partridge is very good for a beer. Good ale and no knobheads.

Don't see why you'd get cruicified. Decent boozer and one that's done more than its fair share to keep live music going. The council want to bulldoze it.

After about 6-7pm Harvey's is full of no-one, wankers or not. Even in there is sliding too, as if to conform with the rest of town - they've had a ripped leather settee for ages now. If it's still there come late October, I'm sending my nephew in, to ask them if he can have it for his 'bommy' (perhaps I'm one of the wankers and don't realise?)

I'm with you on Rice n Three, though prefer a seekh kebab sandwich (see 'Traffic' thread), Same goes for the pubs you mention - not been in Dog and Partridge for years, though it used to be one of the few places in/near town you could have a game of pool (without nobhead intervention) last time I was in it was doing Warsteiner on draught.

So, we've got a handful of pubs/bars and a kebab/curry cafe (that shuts at half five) - the new indian (next to the old Cannon Cinema/Studio 1,2,3) is pretty good also, but not cheap, so that'll probably last about 5 minutes.

It's never been a metropolis, but recently (well, the past 7-8 years) I've come to be ashamed of it. At one point, when Red on the Square, Revolution, Spinning Mule and the other one on Nelson Square next to Spinning Mule (before it went shite - can't remember it's original name) etc. had just opened, I thought we were on an upward spiral...How wrong I was.

One last thing, if Bella Pizza ever shuts up shop (not that it's very good) we'll know that's it for the town centre, that place really is the commercial canary in the cage.

Harvey's is alright. Though if you mention a decent pub/bar on here plenty will say "it's full of wankers".

It's full of wankers...........................decent bar though

it's full of not rights who wear pola neck sweaters and pretendabe whoo ray henrys

I suppose it could be worse. It could be full of pretentious hooray Henrys.

He's right you know, they congregate there before going for a row or punt on the Croal, or a few games of tennis on Queen's Park.

I couldn't give a shit who goes in there - I can sup and hold forth with beggar or king...

Whoo ray henry? Wasn't that a tune popular among posher 'ravers'?

But at least we have a top flight football team to be proud of.................. oops, we've even fucked that up as well.

The thing is, you probably do give a shit who goes in there as a pub atmosphere is largely due to it's clientele.

Folk who are up their own arse may be annoying, but at least they have all their own teeth/veneers and dont smell of piss/ciggies (on the whole).

i've been in bury this afternoon

its fair share of 'rough' types but a pretty pleasant experience

Aye fair point. There's nigh on hundreds of buidings should be in the queue before that

I've been on the Middlebrook this afternoon. Sunny & no kids on skate boards or people walking aimlessly either, which is a bonus.

I even got a wink and a smile off a GILF :D

I quite like slumming it, not with piss-smelling, shouty folk - but there are a few pubs where you get a mix of pisscans of all classes/levels of intelligence etc.

Without sounding chauvinistic, Harvey's is one of the two, or possibly three, places I'd be comfortable taking a girl out for a drink though.

i took a bird in there ( Harveys ) thinking it would be quite with in 5 mins there was a load of people in there i new

not good when the bird i was with her hubby droped her off at witherspoons

ended up at bob smithy well out the way

Do you have to speak like that?

y dids is Morecambe a big word for you

Is why.

I live in the town centre, on the site of Silverwell St sports centre. Me and the neighbours are all a pretty respectable bunch. Mixed bag of age groups too.

Aye I dont disagree it's a shithole but there's certain advantages. Public transport to Manchester, and round Bolton, convenience of shopping and if you're choosy where you go for a drink, you can have a good night. I dont miss the beauty of a Bolton taxi queue either.

And to be quite honest, there arent many suburbs of Bolton I'd prefer to live in.

I too live in town and it's perfect for me. I can have a semi-unconscious bird back at mine from any of the bars/clubs within a couple of mins... and if I pick the correct route, past no CCTV cameras either. You can't be too careful these days.

The only thing I miss is a garden, but I've plenty of mates with those for the very, very odd occasion when we might have a nice weekend.

Have you thought of working for the morecambe tourist board anewman? I reckon that could be the new slogan

looks like they have it sussed tbh, i kicked arse in the lazerquest though, and diddles, be quiet

Give over, Morecambe is the seaside equivalent of Bolton...

I haven't been in the town centre for over 10 years but keep telling myself I should go back and have a look. After reading the posts on here im disappointed to hear about how bad it has got.

I'm off work next week so may have one last trip to my home town before it finally dies.

Any tips on where I should go / avoid.
