I have spotted those too. Polishing a turd.

It wasn't long since all the fronts were redone down there, I presume with regeneration grant money. Doesn't take long to redevelop itself into a ghetto again.

Speaking of Daubhill, about ten years ago, when the 3Ds project was in full flow - the council had a competition for schoolkids.

Design a statue/piece of artwork type thing. Some kid won - it was a picture of a nest of chicks with a mother bird feeding them, it was pretty shit actually, but to be fair the kid was only about 8 year old :)

Anyway, it was 'actualized' in stainless steel and sited on Daubhill, supposedly...

I used to pass where it was supposed to be (opposite the Co-Op, near Sunninghill school) most days and always used to look for it, but to no avail (I was curious to see where the £10,000, or whatever it cost, had bought). It was only in the Autumn when the leaves fell from the trees that it was revealed - what I'd presumed to be a mobile phone mast, cunningly hidden amid a clump of trees on a grass verge was actually a tall, steel post for mounting the 'artwork'.

The council had put it there in early spring, when the trees were still bare - it could only be seen for 6 months of the year. Now it was either:

A. A well thought out piece of siting - mirroring nature, birds after all rear chicks during, erm...the spring/summer months, erm..so. Well, they could probably explain it better themselves, being art lovers and all that.

or it was...

B. Another f*ck up by a bunch of muppets.

A planning apeopleication made to themselves, a year or so after the artwork was unveiled, to crop back the trees, would suggest the latter. Its probably still there if anyone wants to go and stroke their chin for a while - just make sure to go October to April.

Bolton Council will only realise when it's too late.

Have we not passed that point?

There's still an M&S so there must be hope, surely.

It is a given.

I remember when my Granddad did some work for Wigan Council putting up some railings - I was surprised he got the job as he was so straight laced he would never in a million years do backhanders. Turned out he was charging peanuts in comparison to the other tenders but my Granddad hoped a good job would bring more work to keep decent folk employed - not a fucking chance, seems it was just a small job that the usual couldn't be arsed with. He still made a profit on the job so christ knows what the usual going rate was.

I remember this and unless I'm very much mistaken what happened was that the council apeopleied to increase the height of said sculpture, adding about 10 feet on in the middle.

Maybe it wasn't so obvious that surely these trees would grow higher the longer they were left there?

Then again, it's another 'brilliant idea' that will fall into disrepair and be 'recycled' by our friendly local travelling folk. Not necessarily in that order.....

there's more backhanders going on than in a Bruce Lee film

always has and always will be a 'job for the boys'

i know a few builders who've 'won' big contracts with the council, not on their ability and reputation, but just for being ITK and paying the appropriate 'bung'.

Not on our turf it's not, our lot love our town more than anyone believe me. I'm gobsmacked at this post I really am :)

Reet.

Sorry if it seems like a double penetration but it snot.

After reading the comments made on here I decided to paya visit to the town centre yesterday with Mrs Cure and eldest dowter as a fact finding mission/route march, some positives and some negatives can be taken from this, and at the end of the day it's a town of two halves......

The market was actually a pleasant surprise. Busy, lively and with a proper market 'smell' of fresh stuff (though dowter turned her nose up every time I mentioned rabbit, trotters, brawn, pigs head (a fiver! Bargain!) tripe, octopus, squid and various other stuff which she will willingly stick in her gob so long as she has no idea where it came from (cue Little Whit) and I bought some very nice meat, fruit and veg. Next week I'll be filling the freezer with fish and possibly black pudding if it's the real McCoy. Only problem was folks not having a clue which direction to go in front of me, I shall go armed with some kind of 'folk dozer' next week, maybe a kid shifter!

And yes, I did cal to see Mr Hool and had half a sarsaparilla which has gone up somewhat in price but is still de rigeur when I visit, shame he was ousted from the market hall but I'll come to that in a moment.....

The town centre itself was actually very clean, I was quite shocked but that was probably due to the lack of people there. The new Wilkinsons reminded me very much of the old Woolies but without a 99p bin for new cassette albums with no case.....

I sat revelling in my chavdom with TWO Greggs steak slices (heated to just a few degrees over that temperature which is required to melt tungsten) on the benches near the new fountain planter efforts on Deansgate and witnessed not many folks passing. This was at 1pm so I assumed this would be peak traffic time.

On to the former market hall. What a fucking disgrace. I mean, they knew they were fucking it up royally when they did it didn't they? "It's not broken so instead we'll shift the stall holders out of there, effectively closing the place". Wankers. Bag of horse shit, empty units, 'to let' signs all over and some crappy shops with twinkly lights with more assistants than customers. I was drawn into a certain 'shoe' shop as they had very high heels and pointy bits and leather but they didn't have my size.............. And no bugger was buying anyway.

I'd not stop to spend any money in there again, at one time I'd have parted with a bit of cash for a pie, some toffees, pop, cake etc and other stuff for the kids maybe but no more Brookes's or Oxendales et al. Waste of my time and the sooner they close it the better. Maybe they could have a load of small stalls selling charity stuff?

I spent about two hours around town and about £40. I parked outside Decathlon so I didn't spend on parking out of principle and because I'm a skinflint who's never forgiven them for charging me for the priviledge of parking on THEIR streets.....

Apart from the market (indoor was good too though the cafe's could be less smelly and have thinner/less sweaty/better looking people outside them) but everything else was unnecessary, I can get whatever I need from Middlebrook or (perish the thought because I'd need a shower when I came home) Leigh (filthy scutter ridden shit hole).

As for the areas surrounding the town centre, I'd see no reason whatsoever to visit. Newport Street is shit, Bradshawgate is shit, Moor Lane, Blackhorse Street, Trinity Street all shit.

The folks who knocked down the Odeon need stringing up as it could still be earning money instead of looking like a bomb site, loads of pubs boarded up/falling down (understandably as there was nobody about) and the general 'bustle' which should be present in a town centre of this size reminded me of wakes week. Even Olympus was quiet!

Saying that, Blue Boar looks good again and seems to retain it's attraction for weirdos and the Sweet Green was pretty busy so maybe folks who are regulars to the town centre know summat I don't.

Apparently they're wanting to close that pavilion where they hold jumble sales (my mate's dad used to call it the 'nignogs dancing hut' as folks used to go there with a roll of lino and do break dancing or summat) on Newport Street and there was even a distinct lack of goths/eno's on the town hall square.

Saying that, as we were walking up Oxford Street I was waxing lyrical to Mrs Cure (she's a welshist isn't it) that at one time there would be many spectacular drunks supping out of a paper bag on the benches/pavement near the green machine and there just weren't any more....................and right on cue we encountered two (unrelated) drunken idiotalongs staggering to and fro across the place, obviously looking for the Lower Nags, Spencers or maybe even the much lamented Ancient Shep (site of my first pint at 14, Thwaites bitter.....damn that was a good pint.............) so maybe there's a mini revival going on with the more discerning pisshead.

Just don't even ask about nights out, it bores me now with all the fighting. Eeeeh, when I were a lad.... D&P, Millstone, Boars Head, Swan Cellar, Blue Boar, Gypsys Tent, Albion, then either B.I.T, Space City or Duggie Sparrows depending upon which had been closed down. And it was a proper cheap night out then, and no bother it 'our' kind of pub.

I haven't lived in my home town for a good few years but sadly it begins to depress me as soon as I exit the roundabout at Kearsley, it then gets steadily worse and worse as you drive down Manny road. Real shame cos I remember it having a good rep a fair few years ago. As for the nepatism i'm with NB, not surprised in the slightest. I stupidly enquired about apprenticeships with Bolton Council when I left school . . .lesson learned!

It's not just Bolton though is it? I used to work in Moston and the drive along Oldham road and surrounding area was shocking. Proper post apocalyptal! I bet the same could be said for many places in the UK. Bad times
