I think its time I purchased property, but I don't feel settled in England especially Bolton, would it be better to buy an apartmment in Spain or a terrace house in Hailliwell?

£ is weak and getting weaker. I reckon you can pick up somewhere in Spain for fuck all.

The idea of living abroad appeals to lots of people - myself included a few years ago but the reality I found to be very different. I hated it, couldn't settle at all.

 

I've never lived in Bolton so don't know what its like particularly but theres some lovely places to live in Lancashire not too far from Bolton depending on what you want - countryside, city life etc.

 

The grass isn't always greener abroad - and moving could be a very expensive way to find out

A mate bought a nice little apartment in Spain for 30 thousand euro last year. Not the biggest like but serves it purpose as he gets out of this country every month go to it. Cant see him losing much on it either considering it cost what 25k. What can you get for 25k these days over here.

i'd be wary of buying in Spain. I remember watching the news a few years back, where they interviewed several expats living in Spain. They all had land taken from them, such as losing a few acres or half a garden, and the Spanish Authorities were in the right to do it. These people lost a lot of money and they have no way of getting it back. I'm sure if you google it, you'll find the details.

There have been tv programmes highlighting this. Most of the problems were on these new development type places, where the developers were basically charlatans.

 

I still have an apartment in Spain, bought it 5 years or so ago, and its worth about 2 3rds of what I paid for it. Im hanging on and toughing it out for now. Luckily my ex is living in it so I know its taken care of and if anything crops up and i can sort it without any major hassle.

 

Best advice i can give is unless you have someone you can trust implicitly over there, dont mither, there are far safer places to invest your hard earned.

Having bought and sold in Spain, buying now is a good time. Cash is nowhere, so desperate sellers are plenty (mostly ex pats), holiday rents are still strong but it will be a long long time before things pick up. Be prepared, lots of mither, maintenance people you can trust. Your holidays can be taken up with bill paying and general ownership issues. Buy something with a Spanish demand, not just a tourist one, some of these remote 'golf' complexes are like ghettos.

 

Also be prepared to pay 12% on top of any selling price for VAT (IVA) and other fees.

Not sure about Portugal, obviously the south is just tourism. The north is incredible and much cheaper but not sure I'd want to buy as the country is on its arse.

I've always found Portuguese folk much nicer than the Spanish

this is it, portugal and spain are fucked. but they're still nice places to be. irrespective of sun which they're kind of lucky with, its safe for women and kids on the streets at night

 

whats youth unemployment in Spain? 50% of 16-24 year olds have fuck all to do. by rights there should some kind of knock-on effect on society e.g crime?

 

imo, if the price is right and location is good, i.e. near beach and other amenities I'd consider buying

I was in Carvoeiro back in September and its a great little place. It's also worth looking at Burgau if you want a place over there.

My auntie as lived on Majorca for nearly 30 years, she wants to come home now, belting little place in a cracking village near Maguluf up for sale.

Try buying out of town in the shires, the nearest you will get to gated communities. Decent people unreliant on useless labour councils and paki free.
