Should A 7Yr Old Get A Computer Tablet For Christmas?

Featured Replies

My son & daughter in law are thinking of buying my grandson a tablet ( not the pill kind ) for Christmas, they say friends of his have them already, does this sound right? I know modern tech is used in schools nowadays but is 7 too young or am I too old?

My Wifes cousin got a cheap android one for her son who is only 5 years old.........I don't know if it's right or wrong. She said that she would rather her son was playing educational games (she decides what is and isn't loaded on it, and doesn't let him go on the internet) than watching shit on telly. She can also take it off him when she thinks he's had enough

I think provided the parents are going to monitor the use, then fair enough

Can we make sure it's only parents that reply to this thread please, Ta.

No don't do it, I made the mistake of getting my lad one at an early age as well as PS3 etc, now he can't be areas doing anything except sit on th things

Gf little in too, obsessed with the tablet his dad got him at 4 year old

Lyra (daughter) has a v-tech one which she loves to bits, but we limit her to half hour at a time, but she only really wants to play it if she clocks it and prefers drawing..

not a fan myself, and I wouldn't let daughter have one, its purely that my Mum bought her this v-tech thing for xmas,

I'm amazed at some of the stuff the kids can do on the tablet. Think it can be a really good thing, I was initially against the idea but with time restrictions they have been great!

Maths homework is online now anyway.

think restrictions are key with them..

Sulk like fuck

Bought my granddaughter a Hudl last Christmas. She loves it and her usage doesn't cause my daughter or son-in-law any problems.

As with everything you just have to set boundaries.

Don't see a problem with it myself.

Like Swanvesta says, just restrict their time on it.

My 3 year old is on ours more than anyone else in house. Number and shapes puzzles on handy manny and peppa pig etc.

Tablets and suchlike are an integral part of life nowadays, makes sense for them to get involved at an early stage.

They all have one each at primary schools round here now anyway.

In the words of the Obercunt Dark Lord Cowell, it's a yes from me.

If you can't control how your kids use anything, it says more about parenting skills than anything else.

The problem isn't usually the child, it's usually the parent.

There's a whole wealth of educational and fun content available aimed at young ones, the parents can't be arsed doing a bit of research and finding it.

Thanks for all your input. No need to worry too much by the sound of things. I  will advise son to monitor usage.

My 2 godsons both 2 years old, can use an iPad better than their parents.

Like most said if used right why not.

All these words in this box are the right answer

Our 2 got iPads last Xmas (age4 and 7) and it's the best investment to date there's restrictions like othes have said and some top stuff for school work.

Am posting this on my 7 year olds kindle fire. Tonnes of books, appropriate games, and iPlayer etc. Refurbished model to start her off (75 quid). Keeps her entertained on journeys, and is simple to use. Getting my lad one for his fifth birthday as a result. Limit the time and control the exposure and they are a great gift. Personally prefer this as it's equally used as a tablet and an ereader.

What's that xnxx my lad has in his favourites?

I'd never heard of that, I've just had a look and will need to do half an hours research and then come back to you mate.

If it keeps them quiet Then go for it

iPads are educational

My boys have been using them since they were both about 2

Haha at last an honest answer.

Mine use the iPad a fair bit. Watch cartoons, play games etc. Games for kids of that age tend to be educational.

Genuinely can't see any problem with it.

Obviously there needs to be restrictions in terms of time spent / not using it close to bedtime.

Technology innit.

Ours have ipads/pods, great for both learning and playing on. As above it's all about controlling how much time they spend on them and what they're up to whilst they're on them.

Ours all have google/safari etc restricted, all too easy for them to see something they shouldn't online.
