Never seen a team do a prematch huddle on the centre spot, which is where the ref usually is pre-kick off.

I get that, but it wasn't causing any hassle.

If he felt it was untoward then he should have done something about it.

If not, then remove himself from the situation.

It probably isn't within his remit to do so.

I doubt there is any rule forbidding a prematch huddle in the centre circle.

Nevertheless, he should have told them to fuck off until he extricated himself.

Had they refused, become abusive etc then he would have had reason for cards.

Just a ridiculous situation all round that he didn't handle well.

Yes we would in general but I think we attracted a bit more interest when we had our star names though.

The 11 back at corners and not marking thing taken to another level by Pompey.  Usually its someone on the edge of the box that gets a free shot at goal.  Szmodics wasn't even lurking on the edge, more like penalty spot, and they still watched him control it, size up the chance and pass it into the corner under no immediate pressure.  Nobody wants to prevent players having a shot anymore, its all about lining up in the 6 yard box like kids hoping to just get in the way of the ball.

And if they aren't watching players have a shot its the goalie passing it to the opposition for a tap in.
