Zico Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Scored twice didn't he? aye (that was my joke) identical goals, minutes apart my first game as it happens Quote
madthatter Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 aye (that was my joke) identical goals, minutes apart my first game as it happens Quality goals from us - just reminds me what a natural poacher Walker was. As for our defending . . . I was at that game but remember nothing and used to be like Rainman with such small details. Quote

Must be a government initiative to lace the water supply with something that gradually wipes memories, prior to reprogramming Quote
Eavesy Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 http://readtheleague.com/the-big-feature/gone-grounds-burnden-park Worth a read. Interesting about smith who bagged plenty before Nat. Had 6 years off for war Quote

Farrelli Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 A Scotsman, Irishman and a Welshman walked into a bar . . . to watch England at the world cup But England were knocked out before the second pint was pumped. Quote
Whites man Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 But England were knocked out before the second pint was pumped. The trick is to love your country but not hate anyone else's, a fair few on here don't get that. Farrelli you're diffferent in so far as you seem to hate your own country. Quote

England's recent record in tournaments lent itself to the punch line, you can't deny that ? Quote

You're right there and as a matter of fact I hated England after that spineless performance against Iceland. Harry Kane, cometh the hour, cometh the man; Quote
Farrelli Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 You're right there and as a matter of fact I hated England after that spineless performance against Iceland. Harry Kane, cometh the hour, cometh the man; Roy Hodgson had players on the bench to change that game but carried on pumping balls to a tired Kane and allowed his main forward to take corners. Rashford came on for ten minutes and he was our man of the match. With Big Sam in charge we would have won that game. Quote
gonzo Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 I still don't feel 100% comfortable talking about that match. Quote
Farrelli Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 I've got this feeling that Southgate is a younger version of Hodgson (nice man, tactically inept). Quote
Zico Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 I still don't feel 100% comfortable talking about that match. it was "weird" am not into England during qualifiers but come the tournament passions rise a notch or two I was twating around the kitchen with that on, shouting at the screen and getting very frustrated as much as I would a Bolton game - whereas when we got dicked 4-1 by Germany in 2010 was like "yeah fair enough" and generally meh about it don't think I've seen such a frustrating or poor team performance by Bolton or England, ever Quote
Whites man Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 don't think I've seen such a frustrating or poor team performance by Bolton or England, ever No leaders on the pitch (like Beckham v Greece in 2001) yet a couple of months later the players are trotting out cliches like "having 11 captains out on the pitch". Still fucked off with them, the spineless, over rated shithouses. Quote
Eavesy Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 Yet to hear someone propose a logical solution to how to break down 11 men behind the ball? Lump in the box and hope for the best makes far more sense than try and pass through 11 men Quote

From a watching point of view too there was something off about it. It was a Monday night, town was dead, and I just think everyone (team included) expected us to breeze past Iceland and to be gearing up for a "Big England Night" against France the following Saturday. birch-chorley Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 (edited) Yet to hear someone propose a logical solution to how to break down 11 men behind the ball? Lump in the box and hope for the best makes far more sense than try and pass through 11 men I’d start by kicking a standard formation like 442 into touch No matter who we play, Gibraltar, San Marino, Iceland, Germany etc we play with 4 defenders Bizarre against some opposition such as the amateur level nations. Not so much Iceland of course but if they are going to stick that many bodies behind the ball then you might as well go 343 just to give it some balance If it was me i’d only start with 1 or at the most 2 defenders when we play the likes of San Marino. We would be better off with 244 than 442 against that lot. No reason why we shouldn’t be scoring 20+ goals against them Treat it like a 5 a side game using only half the pitch whilst playing your best 1 and two touch passers of the ball Edited November 16, 2017 by birch-chorley Quote

This one I watched at home on my own and it felt like a slow death. You could see the panic and fear set in at rapid pace. We wouldn't have scored if we're still playing now. I, as many others, still haven't recovered from that match. My passion for the national team vanished in an instant. It was like I'd been clinging on to a shit marriage in blind hope things will get better then finally calling it a day. They've caused nothing but despair and anguish all my life. The wankers. Quote
