There was a 4.3 in Deal when I lived in Kent and my friend said it felt like a big truck had driven past her house.

That would have been about 500 times stronger than the one in Blackpool. I wouldn't start worry about getting swallowed up by the ground quite yet

Yep - lobbying and fear-mongering. There are legitimate reasons to oppose fracking. Earthquakes aren't one of them. Or fire coming out of your taps!

Deal sits on top of the old Kent coalfield; Betteshangar pit specifically. Bit of settlement.

Daughters live in Warton. They felt nowt

It's a continuation of fossil fuel use, almost certainly causes earth tremors in the local vicinity, and potentially pollutes local water supplies with the chemicals they use to fracture the rock. I don't feel strongly against or for it, but I understand the worries around it.

My concerns are the very long term effect on the hydrology etc.

It's often referred to as water, sand and chemicals being used to do the fracking.

Putting aside the effect of bringing in those substances, iirc they use methacrylates in the mix.

I'm no expert on the their effects long term, but at a time when we're learning more about the dangers of plastics and other pollutants long term, I'm not convinced it's the way forward.

And then there's the business of releasing more carbon dioxide. A bit similar to the concerns about utilising the vast amounts stored within Siberia etc.

Obviously there are short and even longer term economic benefits, but I'm just not convinced it's the way forward.

I was playing out at the Soul Suite in Blackpool last night and stopped over at Talbot Square. Felt nowt.

OK. Just disappeared down a Google wormhole on this. They inject benzene into the water table? I remember benzene from Chemistry at school and uni and that is nasty stuff. I'm leaning towards fracking not being good at all, simply in terms of the pollutants. I focussed on benzene but there seems to be some other really bad chemicals as well. Learned a bit tonight. In my ignorance I thought that it was just high pressure water and air

The magnitude of the earthquake isnt the only factor on how perceptible it is. This one was at 2km deep, therefore very shallow and definitely perceptible, probably very briefly.

As long as its only happening in Blackpool and doesn't effect us its ok isnt it ? 

We'll ban plastic straws and bags.

But carry on with this environmentally questionable technique to drag out more fossil fuels.

Sums up why we're fucked as a planet.
