jayjayoghani Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 Black pudding was never fashionable in the early 80s. Knew hardly anyone who ate it. Quote

Tonge moor green jacket Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 Bought some cow heel from Bury Market the other day. Magnificent cooked slowly with stewing steak and baked in a pie. Quote

Got some last time we were up from some chippy that you can freeze, still really good just out of the freezer and boil them. Finally found a chippy that does decent chips down here after 20-odd years so its decent substitute when you need a proper chippy tea. Quote
BobyBrno Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 There was a soup Mum used to make every Saturday from a pack of ‘pot herbs’ she bought on Farnworth market. She used to vary the recipe depending on the stock she had available. I’ve never tasted anything like it until I was in Italy in January. I had a minestrone in Verona. It was virtually the bloody same! Quote

Moor St. Junction (opposite side of Bradshawgate to Nelson Square). One of my grandads favourite haunts. Tripe, cow heel and a shit hot tobacconist almost next door. Couldn't stomach all that offal stuff myself but the UCP did a cracking babby's yed, chips and mushy peas. Quote

It does look a bit odd but it’s the corner of Newport St. The old building now gone and a newer one there now housing The Olympus Restaurant. Edited February 21, 2024 by BobyBrno Quote

Our bus stop was almost opposite. In those days this was massive convenience! Completely out of left field, anyone remember the Candid Camera incident at the main UCP in the centre of Bury? I think it was Allen Funt (?). They decided it would be funny to hide a camera in there and then this guy wander up to a table and start nicking chips (with a fork) off diners plates whilst pretending to read a newspaper. One chip and a builders labourer (or similar) knocked him out cold. Big news at the time. Quote
mickbrown Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 (edited) Just had to google UCP United Cattle Products - does what it says on the tin😀 Edited February 21, 2024 by mickbrown Quote

I remember the tobacconist on Bradshawgate too- never smoked but went in on the odd occasion with my old fella. Had a wonderful aroma and was fascinating to see. Also went in with my brother as kids, to get a Christmas present for him, but the old boy wouldn't serve us as we were too young. Fair play to him for that. Quote
BobyBrno Posted February 23, 2024 Posted February 23, 2024 Believe it or not, Arthur Morris Tobacconists is still open. Incredible when you think of the shops that have closed. Quote
