Love a decent rag pudding.

Got some last time we were up from some chippy that you can freeze, still really good just out of the freezer and boil them.

Finally found a chippy that does decent chips down here after 20-odd years so its decent substitute when you need a proper chippy tea.

There was a soup Mum used to make every Saturday from a pack of ‘pot herbs’ she bought on Farnworth market. She used to vary the recipe depending on the stock she had available. I’ve never tasted anything like it until I was in Italy in January. I had a minestrone in Verona. It was virtually the bloody same!

Pastie barms & black pudding.

Other than that, it's a cornucopia of dreary, bland disappointment

That photo threw me for a minute. Some sort of collage? The UCP I remember was on Bradshawgate about half way between Nelson Square and the Gt. Moor St. Junction (opposite side of Bradshawgate to Nelson Square). One of my grandads favourite haunts. Tripe, cow heel and a shit hot tobacconist almost next door.

Couldn't stomach all that offal stuff myself but the UCP did a cracking babby's yed, chips and mushy peas.

Bought some cow heel from Bury Market the other day.

Magnificent cooked slowly with stewing steak and baked in a pie.

After eating the pie, Grandad used to loudly suck the juices out of all the remaining cow heel bones. I used to cringe but he bloody loved it.

Wish he was here now.

That photo looks like Newport Street before pedestrianisation?

Anyway, yeah UCP was on Bradshawgate (see then and now photos below) and Arthur Morris Tobacconists was a few doors down mateIMG_1265.thumb.jpeg.08513b2e70b246a621d862e9a8bcde6a.jpegIMG_1264.thumb.jpeg.1c759b6217d07a340f28407d20a37515.jpeg

It does look a bit odd but it’s the corner of Newport St. The old building now gone and a newer one there now housing The Olympus Restaurant.

Cheers pal. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Our bus stop was almost opposite. In those days this was massive convenience!

Completely out of left field, anyone remember the Candid Camera incident at the main UCP in the centre of Bury? I think it was Allen Funt (?). They decided it would be funny to hide a camera in there and then this guy wander up to a table and start nicking chips (with a fork) off diners plates whilst pretending to read a newspaper. One chip and a builders labourer (or similar) knocked him out cold.

Big news at the time.

I bought it already "off the bone". Bit more expensive, but easier too. No sucking noises neither. :)

I remember the tobacconist on Bradshawgate too- never smoked but went in on the odd occasion with my old fella. Had a wonderful aroma and was fascinating to see.

Also went in with my brother as kids, to get a Christmas present for him, but the old boy wouldn't serve us as we were too young.

Fair play to him for that.

Funnily enough a programme with Rick Stein the other night had him buying the very same.
