As has always happened - I suppose it depends what, if any damage is done in the meantime, and what "longer term" actually means - is it 5 months, 5 years or more?  -  we've learned, as a result of Brexit, that "short term pain for long term gain" has absolutely no finite timescale.

I do know, even 2 weeks in, it's causing absolute carnage in some sectors, especially at the American ports, and even if it's all sorted this week, there will be ongoing trouble for a few more, as some shipments are now not even leaving China for the US, so there will be shortages soon enough, which will then cause inflation.

if he wants tariffs, then that's fair enough, I do get it, but at least give the firms it affects a bit of a run up and a chance to actually do something about it, with regards to unravelling and relocating/rerouting their supply chains.

I did hear something that's probably true, earlier today. Xi Ping doesn't think like Trump, Trump is only interested in the next 4 years, it's the way US politicians think, only ever in 4 year "election" cycles, they don't give a fuck about long term stability. China, always think about how to ensure they can be a dominant global empire for hundreds of years, they're currently about 10 years into their 100 year plan, imagine the US (or indeed our own) government setting out plans for the next 100 years. If it's a competition in "who blinks first" then there is only one winner. Trump will back down at some point, he's already started to, but at some point, he may have to admit he's made a monumental cock up here.

As I said further up, the concept with regards to the tariffs is fine to a point, if you truly do want to bring large scale, low cost product manufacturing back to the US, the execution however has been absolutely diabolical though
