We've been with the same energy company (SSE) for both our Gas & Electric for a few years now, we're on a standard tariff I think.

We've just paid our quarterly bill, which amounted to just a shade under £700.00, (£425.00 Gas) (£270.00 Elec)

Just wondering has anybody been shopping around recently for the best possible prices?

I looked on one of those price comparison sites and found a company called Greenstar, which I've never heard of, but they seemed pretty good on price.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Did a comparison website (Meerkat) late last year and now on First Utility.

Currently pay monthly DD of £50 for G&E, set to reduce in Spring to around £30. (3 Bed end terrace).

Apparently I am due to make a saving of £300 - £350 this year.

Submit my own meter readings monthly and paperless billing.

So far so good.

Changed mine again yesterday.

You need to check at least once a year, but it depends on how much you use as to who works out cheapest.

It's worked out better for me to split gas from elec this time.

I'm done with changing regularly to save a couple of quid, most of them are cunts, NPower, Eon, the customer service makes BWFC look world class. I'm with Ovo, all controlled with an app, and customer service is top notch.

I'll be bloody ringing them!  I paid £114 monthly for gas and electric last year, reduced to £107 now.  I live in a 2 bed terrace.

You need to start closing the windows when you're heating's on and stop leaving all your lights on all night!

On the same subject, I spent about a month in Sept/Oct insulating the fuck out of my house, 3(!) lofts have got Kingspan/Celotex between the rafters and as much roll on the joists as I could fit. Defo worth doing.

agreed. insulation is the way forward. i reduced my bills by about 30% on a 10 year old house! wall and loft.

also check your boiler efficiency. spending a couple of grand on a new boiler can certainly prove cost effective in the long run.

Anyone who lives alone and possibly rolls in from work, opens a tin of curry and a tin of ale, then decamps to the pub until kicking out time, then goes home to bed would be minded to get on the Ebico no standing charge scheme (it's SSE providing the gas/electric)...

I reckon' a big proportion of my bills (at two places) used to be made up solely of the standing charge, I now pay a measly £40 (£20 each) a month at one gaff and got a rebate of £48 t'other week after I gave them my meter readings. The other place is on a peasant meter, was like that when I moved in, anyhow, the standing charge of about 30p a day coupled with the fact I was never there used to mean I'd stick £10 on the key, be away from the place for a time and come back to fuck all electricity. Now I stick around £10 a month on and never run out.

The cost per kwh on Ebico is the tiniest fraction greater than providers who have a standing charge, you'd have to use fuckloads to make it worth the extra charges.

Blimey BCG - I live in a 3 bed terrace and I pay £47 per month for combined G&E  -  and I'm generally pretty well in credit.

We did get the loft fully insulated the other year which made a bit of a difference though.

Over £100 per month sounds a little excessive, unless you're running an industrial oven 24 hours a day or something

I actually spent my lunchtime doing something productive for a change and I have finally changed over to a new supplier.

I calculated the last 12 months bills for both Gas & Electric and my Gas bill worked out at just under £1000 for the year, my Electric was around £800 for the year.

I went on confused.com and I found a energy supplier called "extraenergy" the quote was £1164 for the year and their tariff is fixed until February 2017. This should save us around £600 and slice off 35% of our last energy suppliers bills. The anticipated savings should pay for both mine and the wife's annual car insurance premiums with a bit of cash left over for a few pints too!

My loft is fully insulated but my boiler is about 15 years old.  I knew this would affect efficiency, but double??

They'll be getting a call.  Do all of you paying around the £50 mark, have new boilers?

Yes, we had a new boiler installed around 18 months ago  - the old boiler was about 25 years old, and piss poor with regards to efficiency, our bills dropped by about £20 per month with the new boiler I reckon

Oh and I've had done stuff shoved in my cavities from a big gun thing which has helped too.

I had a man come round and do the very same for me about 5 years ago - I think it was free at the time as well from British Gas or somebody

£54 a month for gas and leccy. Boiler isn't new but not 15 years old.

I reckon some of the site perverts will be treating this as some sort of euphemism. Not me though.
