He was Gillingham bound before Charlton stepped in, so it would appear that the move was geography based.

Not sure about that Traf, it was reported he wanted to get back home to Kent which is why Gillingham were favourites but obviously something else, probably money won in the end? Who knows but that’s a cracking signing for Charlton who I expect to be a major challenger this year.

I'm fairly sure London appealed more geographically than a move up North even further from Kent.

I’m sure you’re right Traf and to be fair from Charlton you’re not that far from Kent anyway. 😄

Can’t say I know much about Charlton’s current state.

Have they got that lad from Palace back this season - he was by far their best player last season so will be a big loss to them if they haven’t?

Hes said to be born in gravesend

20 miles from the valley

Its obviously a matter of location location location

Rak Saki, no I don’t believe they have Eddie. I’m not sure if Palace are looking to loan him again or not but we could do worse than getting him here.

A fit JDB, plus an in-form Vic (assuming Burton levels of goal scoring) plus another 20 goals from Charles plus a young improving talent in Nlundulu should be more than enough goals wise.

However, only 1 of those is likely (Charles) and so there’s a big reliance on fitness and improvement from others. It’s a gamble, but with those 4 (and Jerome playing the Robbie Blake role) I don’t see how we add any more.

I hope these guys repay IE faith in them

personally I’m not convinced apart from Charles but happily eat my words

Did a quick wiki

he's from Gravesend

Assuming he wants to live close to there is 11 miles from Gillingham and 20 miles from Charlton

I Doubt other than offering more money Gillingham would never have been favourites

All about the link up behind for me. If we can sort that area out and get the ball turned over quicker through the channels we will be laughing.

I’d love to, but I assume it’s similar with the London based clubs as it is with us getting Liverpool / City / United based loanees - preference would likely be to keep them close to home so they are more settled and easier to keep tabs on.

In any case, I’d imagine he’s in the bracket of Traf and Bradley - will be playing Championship or above whether he’s loaned out again or not so I’d be very surprised if he’s at Charlton again this season.

May can score a lot of goals if he hangs around the box but he doesn't really work for the team, gives the ball away a lot, runs offside loads and is greedy as last season's stats confirm. In the bottom 3 percentile of all League 1 players for making passes but in the top percentile for running offside FFS.

As for pressing/chasing back i.e. doing the work that Dion does - no chance. .

Classic lazy and greedy goal hanger - but he's got better at finishing his chances, peaking in 21/22, dipping slightly last season but still a top finisher.

Not an Evatt type player.

Bridcutt wasn’t that good and released by Blackpool

I'll agree to differ, looked classy in midfield to me, a class above L1 when he was here, and captain material too which is rare.  Inexplicably moved to CB by Hill.  Latter stages of career ruined by injury.

Being released by Blackpool doesn't make him a bad player any more than Kieran Lee being released by us at a similar age.

What’s a Daryl Murphy?

Ha ha, good question!  Led the line well, knew what he was doing, added physicality which we struggle to get in our forward line, scored some good goals in a struggling team.  Obviously past his best but did a good job for 7 months.

I can't see him playing L1 again, surely Palace will want him at championship level minimum.  Not even a striker and he scored 15 league goals, without taking pens.  Charlton will struggle to replace him.

He's simply had injury after injury.

Paying a fee for them doesn't make them better than those already here.  If Jones, Santos, Johnstone, Toal, Charles and a fit JDB were under contract elsewhere we wouldn't get any of them for less than £200k.  I'd be surprised if Forrester or Dan start more games than their competitors, injuries permitting, but we'll see.

I didn't say that signing a player for a fee makes them better, or that they'd start more games than the players you've mentioned. I said we didn't pay decent fees for 'cover', and that Dan/Forrester would feature in the majority of our games.

Dion Charles played 85mins or more 8 times last season. Jon Dadi has done it four times in the 42 games he's played for us. If we sign no other forwards from here, Nlundulu will be playing every week in some capacity. And with us having five at the back and Jones possibly going to the right, there's every chance Forrester will too.

Offside 34 times in 39 games, less than once per game is hardly running offside loads. He's in the top 1% of all players in all positions - I wouldn't imagine keepers get caught offside very often so the percentile is skewed.

How many games had JDB started out of them? If he's been coming off the bench it's a bit hard to get 85 minutes in

Its a big season this for Dion Charles. I half expected a cheeky bid from someone and we may have cashed in.

Gets his eye in with some proper off the shoulder service it could be his season.

I’d have Lee back without a second thought

I agree the new signings will be involved most if not every week, with 5 subs that's a reasonable assumption.  Maybe my definition of "cover" isn't what you had in mind, I just thought they wouldn't be starting every week.

I'd see the outfield regular starters - when fit (already a big if!) - as Santos, Dempsey, Charles, Johnstone, Toal.  I think they were picked when available every week for most of last season and I don't see that changing.  The other 5 places are more on a rotation basis now that Bradley has gone.  The wingbacks look to be interchangeable, the other 2 midfielders likely to be rotated, the 2nd striker will hopefully be JDB but no doubt lots of rotation/substitutions when goals dry up.  I don't expect Forrester or Dan to start a lot of games but as squad players they'll probably get plenty of opportunities.  In Dan's case I think a lot depends on Vic, if he continues to struggle for form that will be to Dan's benefit.

I'd assumed we'd be signing an upgrade on Lee so didn't question his release but if the upgrade doesn't happen I'd be getting him recalled, or maybe sign him on loan from Athy Colls 😁

Hes retired hasnt he?

Aye if we ain’t upgrading our midfield then it’s only gone weaker by letting lee go
