We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

There were many worse managers than Megson. We managed to find three of them. And not all that many respectively who are significantly better.

That’s very apparent. Megson knew what he was doing but as you say his old school character didn’t gel with players or fans.

However his record here in the circumstances was not as bad as people made out at the time. People compared him directly to Sam but as we’ve seen at bigger places than here, losing a long term manager can be very disruptive.

The only proper manager we’ve had since Sam is currently still managing us.

Exactly, point proven. Why try so early on in a competion that you would ultimatly sacrifice later on?

Because he was told that the crucial thing was staying up. He did what his bosses wanted and kept us up. We struggled after European games. Chances are we’d have lost anyway.

You'll have to organise a seance and ask Garty.

The team in munich (and in all our other euro games) was massively changed from the first choice 11.

Megson did plenty wrong but the trotting out of Lisbon does my nut it

Do you think Lisbon went well then?

Do you think Lisbon went well then?

Or Wigan away?

Nope and it was made worse by the no show from the 1st team following the game.

Great man management right?

Great man management right?

That performance was shocking.

And whilst the lisbon decision was made over his head the follow up performance was not good enough.

Megson had his faults but blaming him for lisbon is daft

Great man management right?

Lads. I'm going to rest you in this massive game we have got and save you for Wigan away.

They'll of loved that

They played in Madrid then put in an awful performance at Blackburn who put 4 past us. That's why he decided we had to start resting players because our league position was still dangerous, and we were unable to take points after Europe.

Well that worked out well then didn’t it

And again, the genius has gone on to wonderful achievements post us aswell hasn’t he

An opportunity to reach the last 8 of a european competition.

Absolutely criminal not to go for it

Lisbon were not that good either it was a disappointment to go & see the U-23 players but heyho we stayed up that year

we might have got past Rangers but not Fiorentina & probably got relegated to boot.

Megson was not a mug just a stubborn Manc with loads of attitude.

In all honesty, I was beyond caring by kick off time in Lisbon. Superbok and port chasers saw to that. I was more fuming with Megson at Wolves and Blackburn.

We’ve had some shite managers since Sam. Megson wasn’t the worst but he’s certainly the one I dislike most

Do people still actually think the team selection in Lisbon was megsons idea? :D

Fuckin ell haha

Besides, I couldn't name the team now that drew in Munich and big sam played a second string throughout the first euro jolly.

Megson was a cock but he did alright. And Lisbon was fuck all to do with him. And we only just got beat.

The former

He left us in the relegation zone and was ripping the club apart. The players didn’t want to play for him. Thems are facts

You can’t change that he was a shit Manager

He’s blossomed since us to prove the point hasn’t FFS

Depends what your definition of a shit manager is.

He kept us up after Lee's disastrous reign in charge.

He managed us to 13th place in his only full season in charge with us (08/09 season) - a higher position that Coyle ever achieved.

And in the half season in was in charge before he was sacked (09/10 season) he was on a run of unbeaten in 5 of his last six games!

He had 12 points from 15 games at an average of 0.8 per game - 6 of those from his last 6 games at an average of 1.0 points per game.

Owen (the Messiah to some) Coyle achieved 27 points from the remaining 23 games for an average of 1.17 points per game - and that included a transfer window where we brought in Jack Wilshire and Stuart Holden.

Coyle was lauded by many for keeping us up but that 0.17 of a game average from Megson's last 6 game average amounts to just 4 points more from Coyle (0.17 x 23) over the rest of the season under Coyle.

As it turned out the team in 18th place was relegated on 30 points - Megson's average after 15 games of 0.8 would just have kept us safe and his last six game average (with a transfer window to come) would have kept us up easily.

Would it really have been beyond Megson's ability to pick up the extra 15 plus points from the remaining 23 games?

My money would have been on him to achieve it as he had a window to bring players in and had experience of keeping us up following Lee's dreadful start.

It's all a mute point now anyway but personal hatred of Megson or like of Coyle does not necessarily translate into an analytical view of their true managerial abilities.

The masses wanted Megson out and Coyle in - and they got it.

As the saying goes, be careful for what you wish for - because one day you might get it!

have we signed someone ?

Lisbon wasn't the problem. It was Wigan the week after.

Not buying that at all. A good man manager knows how best to motivate his players.

Some of these guys would probably never have had a chance at that level again.

Yes they may well have got beaten and maybe lost at Wigan, but they would have had more respect for the gaffer which would have been invaluable.

Garty may well have said the league is priority but wouldn't have told megson how to achieve it.

A game where sir Kevin was an absolute disgrace

Did we try? Our starting eleven at Bayern makes for scary reading on paper.
