This is part 1 of the Politics discussion.

Let me get this right then, Corbyn is going to buy back all the PFI's in order to save the money that goes to the providers in the form of interest payments

Where will he get the money I wonder? Chances are he will need to borrow money to replace the PFI funding, that will mean interest payments surely?

What's the benefit of swapping one form of interest payment for another

He doesn't plan to buy back all of them but he will set up a review to see which ones he could and should buy back. Experts reckon its upward of £60b and that's on top of the Utility Companies not to mention the National Grid. Some estimate the total bill to be around £200b and he hasn't got a clue how to fund it all. The Labour party under Corbyn and McDonald are a scary combination and god forbid us if they ever won the next election. How many Winters of Discontent will we have to suffer before people come to their senses?

And he's planning to renege on the agreed rates, I think

Unless I misunderstood

Also heard on lbc earlier that the top 1% of earners pay 27% of the tax take

And 44% of working age adults pay no tax

If it wasn't for the fact my seat is the safest labour seat in the country (pretty much) I'd actually have to worry about who I'd vote for in the next election. Corbyn or Conservatives is like being asked to choose between eating cat shit or eating dog shit

Can I just point out that Newton's third law has got absolutely dick all to do with politics.

Thanks for the clarification there Kent. I would have been completely oblivious to the fact

  I think you would agree however that, taking out Sir Isaac from the post, the rise of the extreme left or right is usually matched by similar growth in the other?

Yeah - but I'd stop short of saying Momentum are responsible for the AFD. They've definitely been responsible for 'Activate' :-)

Not 'responsible' - I doubt the AFD would know or give a shit about those sad sacks at Momentum.

The point was the rise of the loony left will engender a similar rise in the loony right.

The centre ground (not absolute - as we all know absolute centrist politics is lame duck/toothless tiger territory and nothing would ever be achieved) which, in truth, almost all of us on here are in but in different hemispheres of it; IMO has been pulled too far to the left with all of this PC shite, gay marriage, ridiculous immigration policies etc. and what we have seen for a few years now is the silent majority expressing their views at the ballot box. Brexit, Trump, the rise of the AFD and other right wing parties around Europe are all indicators of it. No doubt there will be more before the penny drops with some of the 'activists' who have engineered this sorry state of affairs.

A new leader with some charisma and a massive dose of common sense needs to emerge from somewhere within the centre ground. That counts Corbyn out for a start. This personality cult being built up is comedy gold. Almost as funny as his proposed treasurers economic policies.

So is the Bombardier situation a portent of things to come when we start to negotiate our trade deal with our "special friends"? For me, when it comes down to the detail it will always be America First and we will end up with a deal that will not be the one that many say will be the blueprint of other deals across the world

Edited by Salford Trotter

The US won't offer us anything special, why should they? - Trump came to power riding the "make America great again" wave, so I'd be surprised if the US offer a free trade deal to anybody....they just don't need to.

Having said that, we'll be no worse off than the EU, as they'll see tariffs as well.

I think this is a completely separate issue and is not a portent of things to come it has been caused by Boeings ongoing annoyance at the rapid growth of airbus which as you know is a pan EU project.

Bombardier have fell foul due to Boeing complaining about unfair subsidies even though this particular contract they did not bid for as they don't have jet of similar class.

This spat goes to the International trade committee in February and bombardier feel that they will win the case and the tariff will be removed.

Whatever happens the UK government have leverage with Boeing given they are customers of Boeing and it isn't a reason for the UK not to leave the EU, we are big enough to negotiate our own trade deals and don't need the EU who act mainly in the interest of German manufacturing anyway.
