Shocking scenes in Catalonia. Considered starting a new thread but this seems as good a place as any to bring it up.

Let's see how the EU reacts to this. A member state using violence against its own people seeking a democratic voice.

The EU will pretend it's not happening what a shower of shit the EU is. Let's hope our government supports the right of the Catalonians to decide their own fate.

What’s this got to do with our Government?

Nothing in one respect; though any civil unrest is problematic.

That being said the government can't do anything else officially than support the Spanish government. Cleverly worded statement says its for the Spanish govt and people to decide....and that its the Spanish courts that have declared the referendum illegal.

Interesting one, we can't be seen to be supporting something illegal in another European country, or Scotland might take it upon itself to have another independence vote.

Let them have their referendum.

its not legally binding so they can do cock all about it.

Wading in like they have done will only serve to cause problems

Dont the UN make Gibraltar and The Falklands have regular referendum to say if they want to stay british.

Why wouldn't the catalans be allowed the same?

Most of EU has said nothing. GB have pretty much said that the Spanish Constitution makes this pointless.

Nothing at all said about the police brutality.

I'm pretty sure the actions of the Spanish police is pretty much what half the posters on here think should be happening to our very own 'great unwashed'.

Memories of the Police thugs at our Athletico Madrid game when i and many others witnessed the most appalling police brutality...disgusting scum

Nothing directly but that shouldn't stop us putting political pressure on Spain.

So you want us to put pressure on Spain to allow an illegal vote? That won't happen but we should be protesting about the thuggery demostrated by the El Cuerpo Nacional de Policia.

Pressure on Spain to end the violence.

Aye, lets wade into a political mess that has absolutely nothing to do with us. It will almost certainly help ease the already strained UK/Spanish relations around the Gibraltar situation if we turn round and tell them their constitutional court rulings are a pile of horseshit.

Pressure on Spain to end the violence.

It's just that you were supporting the illegal vote earlier in the thread.

Aye, I'm sure you'd have loved it if Spain had condemned the British police during the Miners strikes. Bell end.

Well me, anyway   Starting with those feckless halfwits parading in Manchester yesterday please.

As one who spends quite a lot of time in Spain (and a lot more in the relatively near future) I always suspected that this might happen and have made reference to it elsewhere. Scenes pretty much like many of us experienced in Madrid.

They don't fuck about anywhere in Spain and getting on the wrong side of Spanish Police is definitely not recommended for anyone.

What is interesting is the views of people within Spain but outside of Catalonia. Obviously the Castilians would probably applaud and asked for more of the same to be dished out but Andalucians I know feel exactly the same way. They don't want to see any ground given regarding what they see as the breaking up of their country. They know full well that one inch given to the Catalonians will fire up the Basques again and see a slippery slope towards anarchy and/or the destruction of their nation if this is not held in check..

Don't be surprised if Spain sticks up two fingers at the rest of Europe and says 'mind your own business'. You can now probably understand why Gibraltarians vote overwhelmingly to stay part of Britain each time they are given the opportunity!

There seems to be a theme with non legally binding votes causing problems. Trying telling the winners it is not legally binding or even constitutional afterwards. You will get called names !

As well as the Catalans who might vote out there are non Catalans who would vote for them to stay, so the Canaries are keen to keep Spain intact. Bit like the Jocks only voting in that referendum.

If folk want to determine there own destiny why shouldn't they have a vote on that matter. Illegal vote what a load of bollocks a law passed by Spanish judges. Why should it be illegal for the Catalonians to vote on their own future?

Surely you think Spanish judges should be able to make Spanish laws ?

Surely you think Spanish judges should be able to make Spanish laws ?

In most cases yes in this case I think they've made bad judgement and the Catalonians should be given the vote.

but in the same way as UK judges making a decision, someone thinking they're wrong doesn't mean do it anyway.

Can I vote for my own destiny and stay in the EU then? :-)

Yes. You were given that opportunity two years ago

That's for the Spanish to decide frank, which is what out govt. has said. Maybe they should- nowt to do with me.

If this northern powerhouse stuff goes to shit, can the north vote for independence? Perhaps, but it means fuck all.

For me they'd have been better letting it go ahead, but not recognising it, just acknowledging it.

No need to wade in with brutality.

It may well backfire however, perhaps some devolution of powers may be helpful but they've set their stall out now.

No - this is a separate one not sanctioned by the state.

Of course then. Vote away.

It will not make one blind bit of difference.
