We had the most right wing budget in decades - and it was a total disaster.

The immigration total is almost all down to legal migration because we need students to keep universities in business and workers to do the jobs we had Poles and Romanians doing before. 

Not sure there is going to be a lot gained in this conversation. The likes of Braverman and Truss and Rees Mogg to name a few are far more right wing than any version of the Tory party I can think of. They were ignored as cranks until the party imploded on Brexit.

Anyone who thinks there is no issue with a segment of people taking as much as they can out of the benefits system with no thought of ever working is deluded .

Anyone thinks there is no issue with HMRC collecting the right tax is deluded, the 'tax gap' is estimated at about 5% which is about  £40bn per year. HMRC is another area of public services that has been allowed to fall apart by surely the most incompetent Govt ever.

If Labour can just get Public Services running efficiently it will generate £bns. If they got bogged down in political dogma they will miss a massive opportunity.

There are multiple generations of people who have barely or never worked in places like Bolton and Blackpool.

What do you do about it? I don’t think they are living very good lives but clearly are happy enough to carry on. 
 

Most of the problem is money. We need to find a way to engage these communities and employ them. But that’s expensive. And nobody will do it unless they get paid. The free market ain’t going to bother.

Simplistically, you invest in these areas so if we are building a billion new houses as part of getting the contracts the developers commit to employing and training X number of people from this area. Sometimes it will be learning a trade, sometimes work in the back office, sometimes general Labourer. 
 

If people refuse to do the training with no valid reason, you cut back on their benefits. There has to be a carrot and stick approach to be blunt. 
 

PS I know it is not a billion houses. There are business models about regeneration to help ensure there is a wider economic benefit in the area than the initial cost of building.

Yeah but stuff like this has been tried and it fails. Because the reasons people aren’t working are complex and often cultural and the cost of breaking those barriers down is not worth it even to a subsidised employer. 
 

If you are a house builder do you want a labourer from breightmet who’s never worked a day in his life, or a foreign grafter with experience? It’s the latter. And no amount of money a government can shove your way will turn you into a social service than can fix the bloke from breightmet.

Quite a grim view, your words sound like you are basically giving up., which I doubt is what you mean 
 

One of the things post Brexit is that cheap foreign option has been reduced. I think it might have been Lib Dems (or even Reform) who talked about charging companies that use cheap foreign labour. 
 

Schemes have failed in the past as there has been no appetite to run a sustained programme of house building, so 50 houses go up in Bradford, employ a few, next job is in York so no continuity. But if we go ahead with a the numbers being talked about the chance for this being more than a one job piecemeal approach. 
 

Of course no one would expect all of a sudden everyone to get off their arses it will be gradual but increasing opportunity and reward for changing along with reducing the incentive not to has to be integral to a long term economic plan. The definition from my A level years is 'an efficient economy gets maximum benefits from its factors of economy' . Reducing the number of people not contributing has to be a key part of this. Ironically what this also means there is more money in the pot for those people who genuinely need benefits. (Which was definitely a message put out by Reform during the election  - maybe in need to check myself 😂)
