The state pension wasn't designed to give us a comfortable life into our 90s. It was designed to be just enough to see out the five years post retirement before died. A bit more if you were lucky. Same as the NHS was. We need a sensible conversation about how to manage both of these things in a world where most of us have a good 20 years plus once we retire.

Like most things though - we'd all need to collectively pay more in if that's what we want.

Absolutely.

And those kids we're helping now will (hopefully) pay my pension in 30 years.

Many won’t, benefits parents produce kids that turn into benefit adults.

As you are in Australia, maybe a comparison with your country would be interesting. On pension payments alone, Aus 42% to UK 55% of welfare spending. If you include total social aged care, 67% Aus compared to 65% UK.
It’s good to see that both countries look after the people who have worked all their lives. 👍

Isn’t it?

Work place pension will be paying me 35k a year when I retire at 68 (25 years from now)..

Hopefully get more than a few years :p

As it stands ill currently be on 16k a year if i leave teaching now and don't add to it. That's work place and state. It's terrifying that people don't have pensions in place,

Been said many times before. As shit as it sounds, your 50 years of taxes and NI have been paying for your parents’ and grandparents’ pension (amongst the many other things they pay for). Now it’s a case of relying on your kids and grandkids to pay your pension. Your payments to HMRC haven’t been set aside for you, now you’re retired.

The money you paid into your private pension is the pension you’ve earned for yourself.

I suppose the argument (from those who know a lot better than I do) would be that pensions are tax deferred. During your working life, you would typically have received tax relief on the contributions. So, some of your income wasn't taxed at the time, but is simply being taxed/taken later in life. Also, even in retirement, you still benefit from public services (NHS, State Pension, Social Care, Infrastructure etc) - you're still using them even though you've retired.

It's far from a perfect system, I'd much rather....especially as I get closer to that age, that Pensions were totally tax exempt 😁

True enough.
You can't have it both ways.
