Boiler Advice

Well, that's our Worcester Bosch combi boiler truly fooked! After about 12 years of nothing but trouble with it, we need a new boiler. We currently have no hot water yet again, the boiler has had numerous circuit boards, gas valves and a replacement fan, so its got to go!

I presume the new condensing boilers are the way to go? We live in a 4 bed house, so we would like something that can cope, unlike the current boiler that we've got.

Any advice on what boilers are best, approximate cost of a new boiler including installation would be much appreciated!

We did a house up two years ago and put in a full unvented system inc new copper, underfloor heating and rads upstairs. £16k all in bit to be fair our gas bill was under £300 for a year. That’s for a 5 bed house, family in it, on constantly and 200l of hot water at any time

Great system

My mate who worked for British Gas told me to take parts and Labour cover out when my boiler broke.  I phoned them, they covered me and told me it will be fixed inside 48 hours.  The best 240 quid I’ve ever spent, my boiler was knackered and it’s near as damn it New now.  Take it out, it’s cheaper than any cover, the repair man said I got a bargain and I knew I did, far cheaper than my mateswkuld do the foreigner for.

Good man. I'm preparing myself for bad news as far as the boiler doctor is concerned tomorrow. Hopefully a temp repair will see me through. But the system is coming out, and the sooner the better.

I know its a bit of a journey for him, but why dont you ask the plmber we know?

Seeing more of these cropping up. I work with a company called Towelrads who import them from Turkey in their thousands.

You can pay top whack and have the panels bespoke designed to look like your favourite painting (they have a Lowry in their showroom which is brill).

They're neater and more slick than a rad too.

Obviously nowt to do with hot water, but very much on the rise in popularity.

I'm on homecare cover 4 with British Gas

£240 for the year

Service every 12 months

Replace any parts to get it back working if it goes tits up

Also covers leaks, blockages, and home electrics

My mum was on that. Problem is, she also had a brand new combi fitted which came with a 10 year parts and 5 year labour warranty. Both the homecare cover and the combi were supplied by British Gas. It's cancelled now. A plumber mate will do the servicing and, in his words, if she needs a new boiler in a few years, the lack of homecare payments to BG will pretty much cover the bill.

We've got the Boiler that was put in the house when it was built, 50 years ago. A glow worm with hot water cylinder.  We get it serviced every year and every year the bloke tells me how great they are.  I'm dreading replacing it when I hear stories of folk paying 4k for a combi system that needs replacing again in 10-12 years.

What do they call this kind of boiler system and can you still get them new rather than going down the combi route?

I reckon boiler at our last house was a museum piece

Got a fella round every 2 years, he would service it, needed the odd thermocouple

Asked him to price a new one and he said dont bother

Yeah, but ill save on my bills

Indeed, but itll take years to get your money back

And ut wont be built like this one

I had a Potterton boiler installed about six years ago, no mither and works well, apart from knocking black bilge over my gable end.

Sounds to me, a complete novice, that your flames not healthy

Has it been serviced?

Only ask as mine did same and in the end filter was completely clogged up with black muck

Fortunately it was in the garage cos cleaning it made one hell of a mess

Just re-looking at a new boiler, Spider can you advise on the boilers you supply we have 4 hot taps and 9 radiators with a back boiler and emersion heater in the bathroom cupboard. Can you give estimate for your boiler, fitting and closing off of current back boiler if possible. Cheers.

Got a Ideal Logic combi boiler, it’s set to come on for hot water only.

Control panel for the heating is set to off and every so often it turns the heating on, on its own?
Is the house possessed or is the boiler fucked? Was only serviced in December and it’s 3 years old

Is the heating actually coming on?

Our combi fires up occasionally, briefly, so as to ensure a bit of hot water in the line.

We can switch it to eco mode so it doesn't do it, but it then takes a little longer for hot water to come through.

Probably the PCB (control board). Pretty common with combis.

You can either squash your penis into the flue, or ring your plumber who did the service as it’ll be under warranty.

Try the flue option first. Shove some room temperature chicken livers in there first.

Possibly the three way diverted valve has some dirt in it passing hot water to the heating circuit. Worth a cycle through settings water/heating/both to see if it will clear.

I’ll give him a ring tomorrow. Cheers chaps.

My Mrs bless her, academically the smartest person I’ve ever met, logically not so much.

I said the boiler might be fucked, she goes oh god how we gonna cook tea.

Not only do we not need the boiler to use the oven, we have an Aga that runs on oil.
