Based on previous posts from you just wondering if you have any advice?

I have a slightly herniated L5-S1 disc that every now again absolutely floors me when it goes

Physio recommended swimming breaststroke to try and strengthen the joint so joined the local Village Gym and been religiously doing 2-3km a week for the past year which seems to have helped as have had no issues since. Feel like I should be also utilising the gym that I'm paying for but a bit nervous about doing any sort of weights in case the back goes again. Anything you think that I should do to help based on the physio saying that I need to strengthen the muscles around that area? Similarly, anything that I should avoid?

Do you suffer from Sciatica?

No. If I do get pain in the leg it’s down the side rather than the back of the leg

When it goes I can’t stand up without clinging on to doors, kitchen units, etc, basically taking all the weight off my back/legs

I’ve had the same problem. Once I was mobile I started with long walks and swimming before progressing on to Core exercises. (An epidural did help as well)

I now find I can do pretty much any exercise and I’m fine. However on the flip side I could get up off the couch or pick my trainers up and I get the dreaded “twinge”

Bloody sore now, and annoyed my long Sunday run was stopped at 5k.

Reported it via Lewisham council’s dog attacks form. Serves me right for running between Downham and Catford, it’s not the best of areas.

Ok then so what you need to do is strengthen your core. People think this is all to do with weights but it’s not it’s mostly stretching. Yoga is great for back problems, I do yoga 3 times a week and my back problems that I had are in the past.

Stretch your hamstrings but as your sat up on a chair or stool. 15-30 seconds at a time.
Lie on your back leg in the air and a towel round the base of your foot pull your leg to your body

On your back pull your knees into your chest, push your head forward until you feel the stretch and hold for 30 seconds

In your arse you have a small muscle, lie on your back, feet flat, cross one leg over, pull the crossed leg into towards your chest.

Sorry if those don’t make sense it’s hard to write without being able to demonstrate. On YouTube there’s videos showing how to stretch what I’ve said. Hamstring seat stretch, towel hamstring stretch, back flexion stretch, piriformis muscle stretch.

In terms of exercise, cycling is the best one for herniated discs, but in a gym not on the roads, gentle pace, 5km a week will help.

Rowing machines are good for it as well, but go gently

Avoid impact exercises, running, jogging, take your time going up and down any steps or stairs, no heavy lifting.

If anyone has similar problems but suffer with sciatica avoid any hamstring stretches

Need inspiration for my dinners.

Needs to be high in protein and enough carbs / Energy to see me through the afternoon. I’ve hit the wall with meat and veg.

Needs to be prepared the Night before and taken in a box.

This. I’ve just boarded the daughters loft lugging boards up and down ladders, twisting and turning, no problem at all

Last time my back went scruffy-arse Mrs Manc left an empty shampoo bottle in the shower. I leaned in to pick it up and was off work for 2 weeks in absolute fucking agony. Did similar picking up an empty water bottle from the passenger footwell of my car.

Stop picking empty bottles up. Simples.

That's £75 you owe me for the consultation

You know I think so, but no idea how long ago, Nurse said I have to check with the GP today but generally it’s ok with dog bites in the UK, but just to be on the safe side.

Got them sent to me by Nike at work. I would pay the money though for the spikeless ones

I'm size 11, cheers pal :D

I don’t know the stats but I think the long distance WR are set by runners wearing Nike shoes. They’ve always developed great running gear this is just their next level.
