Beyond the furlough scheme, I'm struggling to see much they've done right, and I'm mot convinced about that

I'm a beneficiary of furlough but the cost to the country is horrendous

I'm hearing of a few companies who could be unfurloughing staff, namely haulage firms, who are creating demand by keeping drivers off the road

They're getting prices up while getting holidays and grants

No furlough and I think manufacturing would be doing more than we are

Govt miscalculated what was the biggest risk. All effort was put into maximizing Critical Care capacity. Truth be known the nightmare scenario of picking who got the ventilators never happened. The focus should have been on preventing spread in the community. Folk died in care homes who could have been in beds, we would never have saved them all though we would have saved some. Suppose focus was on crit care cos we locked down late. At the  time it happened approach was probably right. Acting earlier would have given a different outcome, nowt we can do now but learn lessons for the next wave.

Let’s hope that’s right. Gut feeling is that the whole thing has been fucked off and it may take until mid july

 

What do people expect to happen in next 2-3 weeks ? 
 

I think that we are lifting restrictions too soon and most of the indexes will start to move up. (Never have I wanted more to be wrong). 
I do not think we will get back to same levels as previous so the NHS will creak but cope. I just can not see this turning out well. Not sure if I am going stir crazy and my household is not typical but the mental resolve here is a lot lower than at anytime since this started. 21 year old stepson (Yoof) is a great lad normally but is really down. His 18 year old sister has her b/f here so bit better but still wobbly. My missus is trying to put on a brave face but clearly not happy.

The worrying thing on that chart is how much higher deaths have been last 2 days than it predicted. Next week is massive (or hopefully not !) for the numbers. Hopefully this week has been blip because of bank holiday reporting but the 7 day rolling average is pretty flat for last 3 days.

Posted previously that the projection at the end of april for deaths by end of may was 30k, so that was well out

The link above reckons 43k by end of June

We're on 38k now, easing lockdown, without established tracking and tracing, testing levels not hitting their targets, nice weather and a high level of contempt for the government

I think it will be more than 43k

Without wanting to sound heartless, because I’m not, we simply have to do this.    The economy needs to get going. It’s going to result in excess deaths it already has due to the extent of the lockdown measures and timing, but we have no choice. I suspect in reality they want to move the economy forward quicker but are holding back because of the human cost of doing so.

This is the reason I still think the government have an impossible task.

Im back at work and we need to be. We need kids back at school.

I suspect they’ve looked at the hospitals and seen them cope with a peak and have decided that 200 or so deaths a day is just a shitty consequence of not tanking the entire economy.

They could never say this in public, but I’d guess it’s been discussed in the shadows.

It is impossible your right. Effectively and without wanting to sound dramatic it is really much trying to preserve life as we know it currently. The only way to stop this was to lockdown completely until a vaccine and close out borders until the virus has completely been eradicated. That’s not going to happen and it’s also not feasible as we would all be living in poverty.

There’ll be no mass gatherings until we have a vaccine I think.

They can suppress this but unless it just mutates into something harmless (always a chance), we are probably staying in containment mode for the foreseeable.

I’m in favour of easing the lockdown, but this track and trace should be boxed off and proven to work, at the moment I’m not confident it is, the death rates are not moving down quickly enough because of care homes deaths, sending Covid patients back to their care homes is the biggest scandal of all and clearly needs to be investigated when this is over. For me if you are over 60 and have underlying health issues or under 60 with health issues or obese then continue to self isolate,  once this track and trace is 100% working it is time for the rest of us to get back to work, but  makes sure social distancing and hands washed regularly are strictly observed.

If the antibody test proves to be accurate and having had the virus is shown to mean you have (some) immunity then how would the folk of WW want us to use that over here, immunity cards and the like ?

It's only a discussion point for the time being, Germany have passed it to their Ethics Council because of the implications it has but it's an interesting one.

I agree that I think this is the Govts motivation and it does seem incredibly heartless. The thing that is hard/impossible to measure would be the deaths we would see by continuing the lockdown from things such as mental illness.

Yep and we reliant on folk being sensible and the minority not spoiling it for everyone else. Some freedoms are better than none and we need to make the most of them. In reality I expect some people to take the piss show a blatant disregard and we have a second wave in a few weeks. 
 

but even then the trade off between deaths and the economy will have to be balanced. I bet the tories now with hindsight wish they had lost the GE as whoever was in power at this time is on a hiding to nothing

My 15 year old suffers with his mental health. This has been really hard for him. Thankfully, his councellor has been having sessions with him over facetime which have helped.

The slight easing of restrictions recently have been a godsend, he has been able to chat with a mate kicking a football about or go and sit in a friends garden for a bit for a natter. He also went for a walk with his girlfriend yesterday, I do wonder how much social distancing was achieved...

I’ve raised that point before. It isn’t just suicide it’s poverty as well. Which has now come to the fore even more with Rishi’s announcements re furlough ending in oct and being tapered back in July. That’s going to have a profound effect , I think you will get it more than some due to your Commmerical banking background like mine, there are going to be an awful lot of businesses that are bust within a short timescale once the handouts start to be reduced. The economy is on life support and we are about to start reducing the oxygen and then switch it off. It’s breath or die to use a very unfortunate analogy

Which is why their chief advisor doing what he did has more to it than just breaking some rules. It’s a psychology thing. That was a massive fuck up.

Sorry to hear that pal. I along with many on here have suffered. It’s not pleasant. It will have made the world of difference to him that.

Without wanting to get into that topic as I’m just avoiding it as is a waste of time now. I agree it was a huge fuck up and some will use it as an excuse. I like to think people in the main will be sensible about it. 
 

myself and my missus have fortunately not been furloughed so it’s had no financial impact on us, and touch wood, it shouldn’t. I just hope those who predict pent up demand being released once we get ships and businesses open are correct but I can’t see it other than a short term boom. As was seen with the supermarkets. 
 

there boom was 4 weeks and now they are all back to usual levels. That’s direct from one of the biggest supermarkets in the country. But even they have an additional cost base now from all the additional home deliveries they are doing  Which they need to do or lose the business. 
 

even when businesses reopen they will have this extra layer of cost, huge internal operational changes and it’s going to be very very tough
