and why would you, what sort of dick would travel hundreds of miles to sit in a pub near a ground that their team is playing in, especially for a general league match, what a massive waste of time and money, surely better to spend the money in your own town and help out local businesses

That's how I was thinking. I know sometimes fans end up staying in the boozer, but that is largely when we're shite. Moreover, its still on the premise that you're going to watch a game.

With home fans likely to be out, the police would be out in force, maybe even refusing entry to some places. Who knows. 

One thing for sure, if I knew I couldn't get in, would rather go somewhere notable for a good scene than perhaps oldham, stevenage etc.

Each to their own though.
