The Goalkeeper Situation

With the acknowledgment that this has now become an issue it deserves a thread of its own.

For me the biggest problem IE has now with Crellin/the goalkeeper position  (and it can be argued that he has added fuel to this one) is that of how he handles it from a personal perspective. As fans all we want to see is a keeper in goal who is confident, not making too many errors and showing progress.  Let’s be honest the majority of us don’t give a stuff if Crellin is dropped and how this affects him mentally as long as Bolton win.

Of course IE wants this too, but he also has the delicate situation of handling how BC is as a person, what’s best for him, regardless of whether  he still sees him as a keeper who has a bwfc future. It’s a balancing act.

Because of IE outburst post Cambridge we’re in the unusual position, as fans, of knowing some of the managers true feelings about his keeper. We know he has doubts about him, he is well aware of the errors that he is making, but we also know he still has faith in his ability to become a good keeper at a professional level.

So with this in mind what does he do this week? As a fan playing football manager on the computer, looking at his performances and stats I’m saying drop him Tuesday give Alexander/Gilks a go.

But putting myself in IEs shoes I’m not sure that course of action is correct, especially if he still sees BC as having a bwfc future. It’s a risk, but if he wants to demonstrate  the faith he has in him, provide him with a confidence boost to bring the best out of him, he selects him Tuesday but IMO tells him regardless of how he plays he’ll be rested and out of the limelight for 10 days while he gives Alexander a chance in the cup game. That way he’s keeping all options open, including looking at free transfers/making room in the squad for a keeper back up.

The one liners; drop him, sack him, send him back to Fleetwood, shouldn’t put on a bwfc shirt again are easy soundbites. How he manages this situation and when he chooses to drop him/rest him/motivate him/find another keeper, will not only make a difference to a young players mental state/motivation but will also influence how this position affects our season.

I know football moves on but give me a keeper who’s a decent shot stopper, commands his 6 yard box and has a gob like Les Sealy/John Burridge and I couldn’t care less if he’s on stumps. Being com

One thing with Gilks that hasn’t been mentioned. Evatt’s game relies on playing out from the back, and therefore the keeper being good with his feet - is Gilks capable or is he an old school, wait for it to go out of play and kick it as far as you can type?

I’d rather he started on Tuesday, because ultimately I want my keeper to stop shots and catch crosses, but I don’t think Evatt will see it that way.

I’d take a ‘kick as far as you can’ keeper. At least that way the first shit touch is in the opposition half.

Worryingly, during the Orient game, the commentator made the observation that Gilkes was away from the technical area and speaking directly to Crellin on two separate occasions during the game.

Have we ever before seen the GK coach counselling a keeper during a game?

I genuinely believe there was no intention of ever having Gilks playing a game for us when signed as player/coach

If he does come in it really is a desperate move. Not that I’d be against it.

Yes

Last season

If Crellin had been red carded yesterday and we’d had to put an outfield player I don’t think the result would have been as bad as it was. Obviously the level of expectation would change but I think so also would the remaining outfield players play up a bit to protect the non-keeper.

Maybe we ought to worry that they haven’t recognised that we’re already playing with a non-keeper.

Not sure if it’s not a bit nieve if not reckless playing without a sub goalie.

crellin could easily have been sent off within a minute yesterday and then what ?

dont really think one less outfield sub is a problem is it ?

Crellins heads gone, yes he's a professional player but beleive me the harder he'll try the worse it'll get for him at the moment, he'll be in the club houses after games embarrassed and ashamed I can guarantee it. Unfortunately he needs resting for at least till the New Year so he can re set himself. This will probably hurt him but I think its best for him, Ian Evatt and BWFC

Whatever way this pans out it will look as though it’s all down to Crellin when it’s probably more likely to do with Gilkes and the way he trains keepers. Crellin has got as far as playing for a big team in div4. You’d think his flaws would’ve manifested way before he got here.

Gilks was pretty big even when he was playing wasn't he ? What sort of shape is he in now.

If any coach has taught Crellin that positioning for the free kick they should be sacked

BC and I have a mutual friend, and I told just that. He was nowhere near them, and it's either inexperience or poor coaching... His starting position all wrong and not impressed with his wall.

It might have already been suggested, but aren't there any half decent free agent goalies knocking about?

I refuse to accept it’s a coach. There’s no way he’s passing his qualifications if that’s how he’s coached a keeper, let alone a former keeper ffs 😂

When Uncle miami was buying Wigan the 4th Division title back in the late 1990s he paid 350k for a goalkeeper.I suppose if you sign the Fleetwood reserves keeper on loan the expectation should be less but oddly it isn't for some fans

If a keeper has got far enough to make it to the pro game, he should already know himself how to set up a wall and position to take.  Shouldn't need a coach to tell him.

Manuel Neuer would look shit behind this lot, add to that Evatts idiotic coaching tactical nouse and its a recipe for disaster no matter who is in goal.

Keepers are idiots. They need reminding

Send him back to Fleetwood.  Gilks can go in the sticks if he not good enough get rid. No sentiment in lge 2

He really wouldn’t. What a ridiculous statement

I'm wondering if it's Keith Hill.

On topic, the keeper must be having an adverse effect on the defenders.

Dibble mentioned above- I remember the impact he had on our back 4; much more solid.

Oh I know. And I did 🤣

I feel sorry for Crellin. He's doing his best & he's clearly not ready to be a League 2 No. 1 keeper. He looks fragile, flaps at crosses & his positioning for shots & that free kick vs LO was poor.

He's costing us every week & whoever said it before is right - opposition team talks vs us are easy - pepper the keeper with shots & crosses & we'll get something.

It doesn't help him that Baptiste is in front of him who's also a liability.

He needs taking out of the firing line & the best of Alexander or Gilks putting in until we can find a proper replacement. Baptiste needs dropping, we need to go to a back 4 & start from the basis of protecting our goal. Plenty of time to build on that with more expansive football when we have some confidence & points to fall back on.

Crellin ranked 31/32 of all L2 keepers used this season.
