Bolton accent

Had a proper good chat with someone today from out the area about the Bolton accent.  She was on an about how most people in the North West sounds the same apart from scousers.

I told her that I could recognise about 10 different accent within 15 miles of Bolton….and I reckon I even narrow accents down to certain parts of Bolton…

By my reckoning there’s at least 4 accents within Bolton that you could roughly pinpoint where people are from!

Central Bolton, Westhoughton Bolton, Middle class Bolton, Asian Bolton.

I even reckon I could tell if someone was from Tonge Moor/Breightmet by the the they pronounced can’t.

Agree with that.
accents fascinate me, put it down to having parents that didn’t have local accents and a lot of different accents around our house as kids
Always  said I can tell what part of Bolton someone is from more or less.
certainly was the case years ago, maybe not so much now but it’s still there

I can tell someone from breightmet by the way they pronounce Breightmet.

sadly there’s a lot of manc influence now that wasn’t as apparent years ago too.

I married a Cambridge lass. Never forget when I first took her home to meet my parents, everyone liked each other but she told me afterwards that she didn't understand a word my Belmont born Lancashire Dad was saying 🙂

Living away my accent has mellowed but there is something about the Bolton accent that means we always recognise each other, the most common comment when we meet away from the town is "where are you from?"

My missus tells me that after a couple of days back in the centre of the universe it all comes back.

I think they're getting less and less pronounced though sadly!

Yep.

Can still tell accents from around the North West, but with movement being much greater now, those differences aren't as common or pronounced.

Not just round here too. Same with the North East and Yorkshire.

Certain parts of the lad's speech have little hints of manc about them. Clearly got it from mates/education etc.

I blame Radcliffe (manc overspill) spreading outwards into the village and Bury etc.

Radcliffe, definitely the top end was never manc

My mum was from dunstan st and dad levens drive

Obvs, it was a different era

Bought on bury rd, but the only way they could get a nice house with a garden was to buy in radcliffe

1800 quid

Loads of bolton folk did the same

And we never wanted owt to do with the village

Where though.....especially as those houses will be bury

Can they go to bolton schools?

Aye.

My neighbour's lad didn't get in at his secondary school of choice. Ended up at totty.

Remember, some folk move whilst kids are at a school too, and they stay there. My brother did just that.

Definitely more of a manc accent invasion.

A lot of Bolton kids, particularly in Harwood, opt to go to Elton or Tottington High Schools in order to avoid St Catherine’s so I’m guessing it works both ways.

Ah, right. You’re right then, most “nice” schools are over-subscribed and so kids names are pretty much down on waiting lists from birth.

Just found this on Bolton Education Website.https://www.bolton.gov.uk/admissions/primary-school-places

Admission to reception class 2022

You must be resident and pay Council Tax to Bolton. If you live outside Bolton you must apply through your home authority.

Im not having it that you can break down the location of an accent by that much.
