Have we decided who we are voting for?

Or can't be arsed?

  • It’s not just social housing though. The plans are for private dwellings also. It’s the only way towns can now regenerate with all of the out of town shopping centres and online shopping. I don’t see

Local Tory candidate phoned me to ask if I’ve voted (I hadn’t) and if I am going to vote, would I consider him. Said I would vote for him. I lied - fuck him. Now they know how we feel. Play

What would you like town to do. In my opinion it’s exactly the right thing to do for points Frank points out.

I'd like them to lawn the areas until investors come along in the future and give them the options on a area what's best for their business.   We've already got problems with kids hanging around the new bus station etc, it'll get worse

Dunno who it was but someone on here said if you don’t have a party you want to vote for then abstain can’t remember why but it was a good point might have been @Not in Crawley

I might just write Ian Evatt > Simeone on mine

Don't abstain - just put a line through all the candidates and write NONE.

They get counted: https://votingcounts.org.uk/spoilt-ballot

I've phoned my doctors today and booked the earliest appointment which is 19th May, all these new houses are going to make it a lot worse because they'll need a doctor.   Good eh, not forgetting how busy Bury Road is and our A&E.   We are Hell bent on building, yet we've only got two hospitals when we used to have four. I fear folk will lose their lives because of the strain on our emergency services.

I pissed my pants when all the kids from the new builds near me got sent to Fleetwood High instead of decent schools in PLF and Thornton :D

That's a slightly separate issue. Doesn't matter where in the town they houses go: if the town doesn't have sufficient infrastructure and resources, then problems over schooling, nhs provision, sewerage, drainage, and services to properties all arise.

It's why, for me, there isn't a housing shortage as such, but a population crisis.

She doesn’t come over as anyone who cares about Breightmet, she’s from Westhoughton, yet her colleagues have decided to lump these shite houses on playgrounds and football pitches without a whimper.  She’s paid to represent the area, but as I see it she’s failed miserably, she’s not getting my vote.

As I said, what is she supposed to do? You've said yourself she's against it, but there is a democratic process to be gone through.

None of us know what is said in council Chambers, so we can't assess her efforts.

What we can do is comment of what we can see- and from an environmental point of view she's been a breath of fresh air.

hearing there’s loads of objections to that from within Bury Council itself .

and nesting birds are protected from being disturbed but anti nesting netting isn’t , get on it 😉

It is a bit perverse: the law protects nesting birds, but you can stop that happening by putting up barriers before nesting time starts.

Didn’t know that it was law but coincidentally, I was putting up a new fence between us and next door today. Cutting back some overgrown shrubbery and saw a small nest with 3 young chicks expecting food from mother. Fence replacement put on hold.

This is the difficulty.

You may have technically broken the law (fpn incoming 😀) as there is no difference between accidental or deliberate disturbance.

I was once told by a gaffer to cut some hedging around this time of year when at the council. I explained why I couldn't, and that I wasn't prepared to chance breaking the law. She was clueless and looked open mouthed at her colleagues. At least one of them knew the score and confirmed I was correct.

Clear to see how so much environmental damage can be done through ignorance within industry that should know better.

This actually cost me a customer last year becasue I wouldn't chop his hedge down. Can't win them all.

Part of the wildlife and countryside act.

Every day is a school day😊 Hopefully the chicks will be fine and the they will have flown the nest when I come back from holiday in a weeks time.

My mate always goes and writes "all governments are liars and murderers" on his ballot paper. Big Bill Hicks fan.

Would that be counted as a spoilt ballot or discarded as the ramblings of a nutter??

Genuine question

My mother in law lives pretty much in the town centre. She’s in her eighties and goes out regularly without any hassle. My wife took her out for lunch yesterday in the centre as they do often. I go in a lot and I’ll admit, It’s not what it used to be, that’s obvious but the planned developments will hopefully bring the changes needed.
It’s like our football club, things will improve but give it time.

I really hope so.

There's a sort of fact sheet online for ballot counters as to what to do with spoiled ballots and how they are counted. As long as its not clear you have voted for anyone it should be counted.

The issue is in the UK we don't massively take spoiled ballots seriously, certainly political parties don't. In Europe it seems that people do use it properly as a form of protest and therefore parties do take it seriously. That could also be because of the different voting systems though, I'm not an expert but its an interesting thought.

I honestly honestly cannot see how anyone can vote Tories

But then I don’t know who the better evil is.

What a shower of shite.

Oooh exciting. Due to boundary changes we're now voting in the Shortlands and Park Langley ward rather than the Town Centre ward...feel like we've finally been accepted into the posh Village (and given our council tax costs, so we bloody well should be)

This time next year it'll be rah rah West Dulwich all the way....

I think look at which of your councillors is doing good work for you. There are lots of very decent, hard working Conservative councils and councillors.

The ones in our ward are pretty decent, they've secured funding for an upgrade to the playground and did a great consultation in the local pub to find out the ways the residents would like to spend it, sorted out speeding in some.of the cut throughs so it's safer for kids, got a zebra crossing sorted opposite the local school...

My question is do I vote against them because I dislike the leadership of their party, or vote for them because they are doing a rather good job.

Given they will get a landslide here anyway, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference, but I'd also like to see some balance rather than just 3 Conservative councillors (I think local coalitions work better for residents) so I'll probably go for lib dem locally.

Horwich First  (and dirtrod tagging along) independents, or something like that.

I’ve voted for the local noseybonks.

They organise litter picks and dogshit removal.

The Tory candidate managed to mention Crossrail.

Where can I find the skinny of what they’re all going to do?

I got leaflets off the main lot. Spoke to the guy from Horwich First in the pub over the weekend and he was genuinely a sound fella. No real political nonsense, just says he’ll make sure the council are fair in the work they do for the parish. Fighting our corner without having to worry about some local party head honcho.

makes sense to me. We get to choose an MP at general election time.

Wish I was voting in Bolton today - the eyes of the nation are on you.

Anyway, just voted - given the state of the government putting three crosses against the Conservatives felt a bit odd, but as I say they've done a decent enough job locally and i'm not cutting my nose off the spite my face just because Boris Johnson is a complete tool.
