Just having a debate with a few of the lads about the best English players And this has come up, who was better Rooney or Gazza? For me it’s Rooney all day

Great players win things consistently over a number of seasons 

It's why Matt Le Tissier was a cracking player on his day but not considered one of the greatest top flight players even though he was a joy to watch and scored great goals 

But Le Tissier V Scholes isn't up for debate either

I liked ince outstanding at club level but felt at times he didn’t bring it on the international front 

Don't think many will come close to how good Rooney was in EURO 2004 before his injury.

It depends on the arguement/comparison/context 

You'd be hard pushed to place David May ahead of Gazza as a top English player depsite his personal tally

Rooney would never have reached the levels that he did twatting about at Everton though. Would have been interesting to see how he’d have got on if he’d gone abroad, mind. 

Gazza at his peak is untouchable.  Trouble is that peak didn't last very long.

Everton a few times 

Rangers in a champions League  game / a couple of League games 

Middlesbrougth  Twice 

and One England Game  

was outstanding in them all 

for rangers he scored  19 in his first season and 17 in is second
