I think it’s hard to say whether they’ve increased or not but certainly it feels like they have. But it’s hard to know how much that is social media amplifying them. But go back to 2005 and it’s hard to imagine folk voting for Farage and Trump and public figures saying the sorts of things they do or hearing the amount of overt racist and misogynistic stuff you do today.

hate crimes towards other races and sexualitys are on the up

is that because they are happening more or being reported more?

is racism on the rise because people are calling it out more?

combination of both for me

maybe intolerance came before tolerance but it seems like a "vicious circle" to me

because on the one hand I'm being told we're more tolerant now than we used to be

but on the other I'm being told it's more overt and out there than it used to be

It can be both things. Society is more "tolerant" than it was 70 years ago, but has become less "tolerant" over the last decade.

I think it’s quite complex. I think if you mapped the median person in society they’d be way more tolerant and open minded now than they were 50 years ago. Way more.

But I think there is also on the extremes folk who feel emboldened to be overtly racist, misogynistic and intolerant. In a way that even 50 years ago wasn’t so common. What’s hard is to know what has happened.

Totally anecdotal but lived next door to someone for years and it’s only in recent years they’ve started using p*ki at least in my earshot. I’m sure they’ve used it all their life but I guess feel emboldened to just openly say it on the street.

Yeah and there is a classic example of treating people poorly because you think you can. It’s a hugely complex issue and I do think women should have their own spaces. Equally though people who have transitioned are still people and deserve some basic decency until they prove otherwise just like everyone else.

If you went back to 2005 or 1995 - I think that you’d see things very differently. We have people now upset about everything on all sides. But being tolerant and open minded was our way as a society but we’ve lost it. That has nothing to do with bedwetters - it’s just what decent societies do. They don’t divide people.  But again I feel this is already pointless. Treat people reasonably. I don’t think that’s hard to do and we have to an extent lost our way all round.
