aye

the point he made which I didn't agree with was that racism and homophobia was eroding

my point was I don't think it was, it was always there,

a combination of social media, brexit, blm, turmp, farage, etc etc have given people the "confidence" and chance to get their views out there in a way we've not seen before

some of the replies to the tweets of the airport videos are depressing

those aren't thoughts or opinions that folk only developed after the economic crash or when the tories have been in power, they'vea always had them

folk have always been racist, islamohobia has gained momentum since 9/11 and all the terrorism and grooming of the 00s onwards

but saw plenty racism in bolton in the 80s and 90s

I used the term "eroding away" as it describes an extremely slow process. Nobody in their right mind can deny that racism/homophobia/etc have been on the wane compared to the last century. And surely nobody in their right mind can deny there has been a resurgence of these views in the last decade or so?

Did we see any of these prominent Muslims all over social media after the arean bombing or various grooming scandals?

Fckn hell mate.

The vast, vast majority of Muslims found the attack as abhorrent as you or me. Loads of the prominent people you’re talking about spoke out about it. As Cheese just proved to you.

Another massive generalisation

I think there's been an increase in our exposure to the views

Yes they've been fuelled

But I don't think it was ever eroding

I think it's been getting worse this century

As said, most noticeably for me since 9/11 and subsequent wars and everything that followed

Certainly in my lifetime, the last 25 years were far worse than anything in the 80s and 90s that Ive come across

Not heard of any calling out the attack on the squaddie yet

Have Christian groups condemned it?

Does a white person have to speak out every time another white person attacks someone?

Still not heard the full details on this one anyway. Was the poor lad attacked by an Islamist?

So you think racism and homophobia is just as rife now as it was in the 1950's, when hotels had "no blacks" on their doors, and being gay was illegal?

In this country?

I wasn't alive but I certainly think homophobia is more rife now as more people are open about it and we're exposed to everything that LGBTQ+ has to offer

I think racism is more rife now because of the rise in immigration and more minorities across the country living here

The more gays and ethnics there are, the more homophobia and racism there will be

Simplistic view maybe but I've tried to sum it up in a couple of paragraphs

Homophobia is more rife in 2024 than in the 80s or 90s not on your nelly. Exposure is actively one of the examples of why it isn't as rife.

I was setting it up for a why the hell are they so vocal about then post....

Then Cheese served an ace :)

But my point is people were quick to say Muslims shouldn't have to come out and apologise for things nothing to do with them.

Likewise they shouldnt be getting their knickers in a twist now about some scroats getting beat up in an airport.

It's fuck all do with them.

Yes, in this country.

I think your logic is inverted. People are more open about being gay because we are a less homophobic society, and there are less racists because people are more exposed to other races, and they can see we're all basically the fucking same. Unfortunately we seem to be regressing lately.

I agree. I think it’s all social media driven. The views have always been out there now there is a channel for it. Andrew Tate. Tommy Robinson etc. had no outlet. Now they do. And they sucker in the vulnerable and poorly educated. Same has happened throughout history it’s just the barrier is lowered now.

And that social media plays it's part

I think it's paradoxical in that as you see both an increase in tolerance and an increase in resentment and ism and phobia

I just don't think it's been a recent regression

People are more comfortable sharing their views from behind an anonymous Twitter account

These aren't recently developed views

For folk my age they've been years in the making

Now there's an outlet for everyone

So you see more love and you see more hate

Definitley got worse with Brexit/Trump and the type of dogshit politics which followed too

If it was a white lad in those videos there’s no way 100’s of “Christians” would have gathered in Rochdale last night.

agreed

nor would everybody on twitter except rayguns be saying it was OK

We will have to agree to disagree then. In my experience, acceptance of 'others' has definitely been on a downward spiral for the last decade.

Going off what? There’s no doubt this country has been more accepting of “others” in the last 10 years.

Going off my experience, like I wrote in the post you quoted.

Did Tommy deliver leaflets through thousands of doors to organise that?

Thanks for proving my point 💪

No idea, but I'm guessing it was arranged on facebook.
